Lengis Hijau foundation is a foundation supported by Switzerland that collects used cooking oil from homes, restaurants, hotels, street vendors, etc. and convert these oil into biodiesel, soap, compost, and/or animal feed. Lengis Hijau pays you Rp.2000 for each litre of used cooking oil you give them. I went to Lengis Hijau foundation a few days ago, bringing 2 litres of used cooking oil with me.
As you all know, cooking oil is bad for our health once it is re-used 3 times. It becomes toxic to our body after being re-used for 3 times. A way to dispose our used cooking oil is to bring it to a biodiesel industry that is willing to take in your used cooking oil.
We should never dispose our used cooking oil into the sink as water does not mix with oil. This would go down the drains and to the rivers which would damage the environment and it would be hard to clean.
A way of disposing used cooking oil without harming the environment is through compost. It is possible to make your own compost for your plants. These are the steps:
Step 1: Provide a container for making your compost. It is okay to use a metal barrel or keg or a medium sized plastic container with a lid.
Step 2: Collect organic trash (Food leftovers, dry leaves, eggshells, etc.)
Step 3: Put them inside the container.
Step 4: Pour the used cooking oil over the pile of the organic trash
Step 5: Add some water
Step 6: Stir and flip over the pile once in a while.
Step 7: Cover the container with the lid.
Step 8: The compost will be ready in a month.
How to know that the compost is ready?
1.It will produce heat, meaning that the reaction occurs.
2.If you stir and flip over the pile and it gets cooler, then the compost is ready for your plants.
I have started submitting the used cooking oil from home for the past one year. This has made a difference in our family because it has made us healthier as we now know that we should not reuse used cooking oil for over 3 times and we no longer dispose our cooking oil in places that would damage the environment. Before, we didn?t know that we should not dispose our cooking oil into the sinks, but now that we know, we stop and find alternatives for disposing the used cooking oil.
Start with your family and make a difference. From this, you can spread the word to your friends and encourage their family to do the same. Not only for the environment, but also for your health.
