My New Year Resolutions

by Neha Swaminathan | 28-01-2016 01:39 recommendations 0

Wish all the readers a Happy New Year. I am listing below my New Year Resolutions to promote green living. More important than making the resolutions is each one's effort in fulfilling the resolutions. I hope to be able to achieve my goals.

STOP WASTING FOOD

We all know how wasted food ends up in landfills and adds to global warming when the rotting food emits methane. The good news is that all it takes to fix this problem is a little bit of effort in labelling the expiry dates of purchased food and collecting the ones going to expire soon in a specific shelf in the fridge or outside storage shelves. Then focus on using them before they go stale. This will go a long way in reducing the amount of CO2 that results from food waste as well as on your annual grocery budget. Also I will ensure to donate food that cannot be consumed within the indicated expiry date.

ADOPT A MORE LOCAL and ORGANIC FOOD

We all know that processed foods cause health issues and burn a lot of energy in transportation between countries by sea and even by air. Now-a-days almost all supermarkets inform the source of the vegetables and food. Why not choose a locally grown vegetable or a locally processed food? This is an important initiative I will ensure in selecting the food we consume in our family. Making these kinds of foods a larger part of our diet helps reduce our carbon footprint. Also choosing organically grown vegetables helps in avoiding the pollution of the soil in which they are grown, save us from health disorders as well as protect the other organisms in the ecosystem.

DO AN ENERGY AUDIT AT HOME

I already adopt a lot of green initiatives at my home like using CFLs or LEDs, switching off unused appliances like computers. I will adopt an energy audit in knowing the power consumption information of the gadgets and use the best power-saving modes available. I will also focus more on waste of power by keeping appliances in standby mode.

REDUCE USE OF TISSUE PAPERS

I have written in the past about how the use of paper towels kills trees and the tigers, mainly in the far eastern countries. I mostly use cotton towels but I will now ensure to avoid paper towels or instead use the one made of fully recyclable sources. I recently read a scary fact that 3,000 tons of paper towels end up in landfills every day.
