New camera can record methane gas

What if we can now see the methane around us in the air? Well, now cameras are so advanced that we can watch and even record the methane gas in the air. A research team from Linkoping and Stockholm University lead a project to develop this camera. This camera is drawing attention, expected to play a crucial role in monitoring and measuring the greenhouse gases.

The Methane concentration has increased by about 150% since 750, and it is responsible for 20% of total radiative forcing from World-wide greenhouse gases. Methane concentration can unexpectedly increase, and scientists have been having hard time measuring it. Also, the way the measured Methane before was highly uncertain. However, this newly developed camera is expected to improve this situation.

Developed by several groups of experts from astronomy, biogeochemistry, engineering and environmental science, this camera is also noted for its ability to measure methane in different conditions, such as: sewage sludge deposits, combustion processes, animal husbandry and lakes.

The professor at Tema Environmental Change, Linkoping University who directed this project stated that this camera is very sensitive and this it allows researchers to measure methane concentration down to ground level with much precise result. This camera will separate methane from other gas to increase its accuracy.

David Bastyiken, another professor at Tema Environmental Change, Linkoping University, claimed that this innovative project ?[gave] us new possibilities for mapping and monitoring methane sources and sinks, and [that] it will help us understand how methane emissions are regulated and how we can reduce emissions.? I hope to see improvements and newly developed solutions according to these results to improve problems on greenhouse gases!

Wow! This sounds amazing :) Camera to record and see the methane gas can be effective tool for measuring the emissions and concentration in atmosphere.
Thank you for sharing this new finding dear Yuna :)

I have ever seen a camera than can record carbon dioxide and now there is camera that can record methane. That is fascinating. It will be useful to help people reducing greenhouse gases. Thanks Yuna for sharing this innovation
