|BRAZIL| Food Waste Issue

by Luiz Bispo | 02-02-2016 11:27 recommendations 0

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation, around 1/3 of all food produced in the world is wasted. That is a shame since a lot of people around the Earth do not have even a bit of bread to eat.

In Brazil, 40 tons of food is wasted every day. The data was taken by EMBRAPA, the Brazilian company for livestock and agriculture research. Such amount of wasted food should not happen and we need to change its perspective.

Research shows up that more than half of the wasted food occurs during some production phases such as: growing period in the field, manipulation when harvesting and when storing the food. The rest is wasted during the distribution and consumption.

The Brazilian company estimates that the wasted food rate of the nation could be enough to feed about 19 millions of people.

A great solution to decrease food waste is though reusing it. There are a lot of recipes for this purpose. Unfortunately, the habit of reusing food is not common in Brazil. Just a few people reuse it and make other dishes through gorgeous and interesting recipes.

Education is the key to solve this problem. People need to be aware of the causes and consequences of wasting food connecting this action with economic, social and environmental issues. Nevertheless, the development of technologies can also be a great way to mitigate this problem. For instance, during the growing and harvesting phase of certain crop.

The graphs bellow provide a very interesting idea and reference about the issue.

Food wastage is a menace in many parts of the world. Here in Kenya for example, one cannot move a short distance without finding thrown garbage of leftovers. As we strive to eliminate food insecurity, I guess the first goal towards achieving this is to avoid food wastage. share if too much.
    Thanks for sharing.

Food waste is indeed a social crime. Food one wastes is the food he has stolen from a hungry stomach. It is one of the most serious challenges faced by world today and it needs change in mindset. You are right people should be educated about the wastage of resources (used in food production) due to food waste. Thanks for a well written report.

Dear Luiz, food waste has been a growing challenge these days. Yeah, most of the food is wasted during harvesting period. Adoption of modern technology and equipements can minimize such losses. Rightly pointed out, education is the key to avoid food wastage. For instance, we can package left over/extra food in restaurants/canteens and have it later as well.

Luis! I hope you're doing fine in Korea, it's wonderful place to be :)
I Definitely agree that food waste issue is a big part of environmental issues. I'm surprised to hear that Brazil has 40 tons of food wasted everyday, and I'm sure many other countries are under similar condition, I hope we can pay more attention to this problem as this is one of the issue that everyone can take part to improve on.. I love your diagrams! Thank you for sharing :)

Hi luiz, I am Agricultural and Animal sciences student from Diponegoro University, Indonesia. That is true that agriculture sector contributes to the environmental problems such as waste and emission. That's why I initiate a environmentally friendly farm system through my community. A lot of things can we do to minimize the negative effect from agricultural sector as I do right now such as educating local farmers to manage their waste product. Nice to share ideas with you about this topic
