700 Millions frogs killed every years - Let us save them

by | 10-12-2012 09:13 recommendations 0

It has been noticed that the number of  various types of  insects  increased in our locality ( Ghora Bandha, Jamhedpur , India )  in last few years.  The entry of  large number of insects is our study room,  mainly in evening time is a regular phenomena.

During  brain storming  discussion to find out on  the reason behind the increase of insects, we noticed that the number of frogs reduced in few years  and their food became surplus.  That is way, here is an ecological unbalance situation .

On  the way to school,  we often noticed one or two dead frogs on our local road  mainly  after rain . Shibajyoti shown to us,  dead body of  4 frogs were lying in the dustbin of  Biology practical laboratory . To study biology,  is it  essential the dissection of innocent frogs ?
As a solution we are planning  to do some things. Made posters,  poems and put in our  club house.
When we tried to get information about  frogs, found a very sad story about   killing of frogs. Around 700 millions frogs are being killed  every year by 700 millions human .  So following  10 major  actions  are requested  to save them: ==

1. Frog Legs: don't eat them! - To Save 400 millions
Europeans alone consumed roughly 150 million frogs per year in last decade—and worse, the amphibian for food trade is highly unregulated, so they're almost certainly not being sustainably caught.  New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco , these three cities alone import over five million amphibians each year.  We should not eat their legs.

2. Do NOT use pesticides! To save 140 millions.
Pesticides and herbicides are toxic chemicals,  that generally undergo hardly any  testing on amphibians prior to their being approved for use. The amphibians have permeable skin that is highly absorbent. Populations of  yellow-legged frog Rana muscosa that live downwind of highly agricultural areas have disappeared at a significantly higher rate than other populations.

3. Save frogs on the road! - to Save 100 millions
It's predicted that hundreds of millions of frogs end up as roadkill every year—so need keep our eyes open  and drive slowly, especially after or during rain. Amphibians like to take their time crossing the road...give them a brake! Roadkill is a significant cause of frog mortality in many parts of the world. There are at least 1 billion  vehicles on the planet if we conservatively estimate that each vehicle kills only one frog every ten years, that would mean 1 billion  frogs are killed by vehicles each decade.  It means 100 million killed per year.

4. Do NOT purchase wild-caught amphibians -
Over 20 million

wild-caught amphibians( http://savethefrogs.com/images/PDFs/Schlaepfer%202005%20Amphibian%20Trade.pdf ) are legally sold on the international market each year, and many more get sold either domestically or illegally. The wild amphibian trade is thus a significant contributor to amphibian declines and extinctions

5. Do NOT dissect frogs
Frog dissections( http://savethefrogs.com/actions/dissections/contest.html ) are unethical and unnecessary.   Furthermore, they are contributing to the depletion of wild frog populations and the spread of  harmful invasive species and infectious diseases. Highly recommends that schools switch to virtual dissection software such as the Digital Frog 2.5( http://savethefrogs.com/gifts/digital-frog.html ).  These can save 10 millions frogs very year.

6. Use rechargeable batteries
Around  15 billion batteries are produced each year worldwide. Batteries are packed full of toxic heavy metals (e.g. mercury, cadmium, lead and nickel) that can cause limb malformities in frogs. Purchase rechargeable batteries. They will save money and reduce our ecological footprint( http://www.myfootprint.org/en/ ).

7. Build a frog pond behind your home or school
To develop interest on frogs on children, need build a frog pond behind every home and r school.  The  effort will be rewarded when they see the first clutch of eggs in the pond, and when the first tadpoles metamorphose and crawl out of the pond!

8. Keep Non-Native Fish Out of Your Pond
Fish are one of frogs' worst enemies: they like to eat  frogs eggs. But they've evolved to strike a balance with those they share a natural habitat with. So don't throw the natural ecosystem out of sync by adding a non-native fish to your pond.

9. Conserve Water to save home of Frogs
Your tap water most likely comes from pond / dam/ river   that frogs call home—limit your water use and make sure there's plenty of it to go around.

10. Need Spread the above information to stop their killing and allow them live for our benefit.

Thank you Christy Lee, for loving my art,
Can you tell me, How to make frog a little smart?
when will they able to run like rat?
Then only they will be saved from man or cat.
Otherwise telling you by biting my green drum,
In next century, they will be seen only in museum.

Thanks to Christy for your valuable comments.
The credit goes to Shibajyoti and his cricket team. During playing on ground noticed dead body of one frog. From that time they are trying to do some thing.

He calculated the after studying different websites.

Hope the number 700 millions is right?

Wow, this is a great article Rajashree.
Yes frogs are doing important roles in aspect of biodiversity but most of people do not care of this matter.
Thank you for the valuable ideas and scientific fact about frogs.

Also, I liked the poster a lot drawn by Shibajyoti!!
