An initiative by Falcon Autistic Solar Team:-
- Article by Madhav Datt

Part of my series highlighting youth initiatives for motivation of youth like you and me to start actual grassroots initiatives for positive environmental change. Contact Green the Gene - to join up and help us in our mission. Or bring a few like minded friends of yours to join up and start up any such activity. For any help - let us know.

Our goals are to educate students and the community about the benefits of solar energy in a fun, educational manner. Energy activities we have done include:
•Solar demonstrations, recycled art show and projects, energy calendar, 2 PSAs on solar energy, field trip to a wind farm, a water education site, and an energy education site, hosting an Energy Run, and litter removal projects. The results we have achieved include presenting to 20 classrooms, spreading our message to thousands in our community, and having my special-needs students improve their social and communication skills by speaking in front of large audiences.

In 2010, our higher-functioning students with Autism decided to form a club called the Falcon Autistic Solar Team to help peer-tutor other schools about how a solar panel takes radiant energy from the sun and converts it into electricity. The focus of the Falcon Autistic Solar Team (FAST) is to travel to other schools in Kern County, CA and teach their students about how solar energy works.

This project is both creative and original in that it helps to mainstream our Autistic students with their peers, and it provides outreach and awareness about green energy and promoting renewable energy for a sustainable future. Protecting the environment and environmental stewardship are very important items on the President?s agenda right now. The FAST club hopes to provide an open forum through our presentations so that local students will think about ways they can make a difference too.

Activities we have done include: Solar Demonstrations, Litter Removal Projects, Hosting a Recycled Art Project, Filming 2 Public Service Announcements about solar Energy, Creating an Energy Calendar, Making Energy Place-mats to be used at a local restaurant, Hosting an Energy Expo on Campus, and Sponsoring a Falcon Energy Run on our campus.
