Nancy Tree Legacy

by | 01-02-2013 07:14 recommendations 0

This is my tree. It is one of the many trees that were planted in almost all parts of Zambia. The trees were handed out to each delegate at the end of the first ever Zambia Children?s Climate Conference (ZCCC). The conference was held by UNICEF in Lusaka calling on delegates from all provinces of Zambia. This is in an effort to sensitize then on issues of climate change following the Copenhagen Summit in Denmark. The trees were given to ambassadors for then to plant in their communities, schools and homes. Unicef, with the help of Zambia Wildlife (ZAWA) was able to identify each tree specie by scientific name and local name. This tree was planted by Nancy Saili, from Solwezi district in North-Western province, she is among our senior Climate Ambassadors that trained with me the first time ZCCC was launched. The scientific name of the tree is Khaya Nyasica and the local names are Mululu ( Bemba, Kaonde and Tonga) and Mlulu (in Nyanja). The tree was planted on the 2nd of May, 2010 and is now more than 2 years old. This tree will not only act as an absorber of carbon from the atmosphere but also as shade from the sun, as a home for wildlife, also as a tourist attraction.
