Why save trees? |
---|
I decided to put in the stages of a tree, how we destroy trees and why we should protect them in an orginal story created by me. Read and Enjoy! *This story is the point of view of a tree Dear Friends , I know by the time you receive this, I will be extinct. This won?t stop me from telling you about my journey, my long exasperating tiresome journey full of jagged ends and lined with cruel torture methods although, this journey was sprinkled with tiny bits of sugar-coated adventures which I still cherish. I started my life bubbling with enthusiasm. A prime infantile pine pumped with zest and laden with spirit ready to explore the world. My siblings and I looked forward to the life ahead of us even though we had little knowledge of it. I grew up amidst the hubbub of the lush green trees and against my mother?s smothering and comforting trunk. The squirrels would whisper in my ears and gently knock their nuts on my intertwined branches and monkeys would leap from branch to branch with their white flicked tails hovering in front of my face. My friend, the jacaranda would quaver and from time to time shower a heap full of sweet smelling purple flowers on me! Slimy segmented worms would clutch my roots and quiver making me tickle. Termites loved me, they would make their soft tunnels encrusted with dust and would gently trod on me sending waves of glee! Huh, but on the other hand, moles would dig tunnels underneath me and in the process bite my roots sending searing jabbing pains all over me. Taking care of us trees is very crucial to the other species that depend on us for their survival. They will become extinct if we are gone and loosing those animals will ruin the food chain which will end up losing more and more animals it?s a vicious cycle to even think of cutting down trees for man?s selfish gain. On the other hand trees in the forest grow up as a community protecting each other. Sunlight, wind and ice loading and once they are exposed to these elements they get destroyed. At the end of the season, man would come and go but not empty handed. His machines so loud and ruthless would leave us in tears of agony and shock. Why would man be so cruel to us, after all, we have shared almost everything together in such symbiotic relationship? One day, I simultaneously heard the roaring of trucks and whirring sound of machinery that almost deafened my ears. I watched in horror as I saw filthy, grey machinery come menacingly towards us. My mum had warned me about them, but I had never imagined it would ever happen. A large bull dozer approached a flat area packed with trees and without even blinking it made the horrendous hacking through the tree barks! This was done with no consideration of the species, size, maturity or condition of the tree, remember my friends damages done to trees can never be repaired. I could see friends who I grew up with die. They were all, then, roughly bundled up and stacked into a lorry and driven off to the far end of the forest. I waited for my turn apprehensively. The whole green wild lush land was cleared. A huge posh white house was then built. I could see my friends, one by one being cut and then carved to make furniture. Their fragile limbs were hammered and mercilessly chopped off. Their wooden shavings were blown away in the grievous breeze. My mother became the window panes and my aunty the dining table. I just couldn?t believe? Unfortunately, the process involved with construction can be deadly to nearby trees to. The trees growth declines after several years due to physical injuries to the trunk and crown and cutting of roots thus leading to the loss of trees. The construction people never consult professional arborists during the developing stages. Furthermore the compaction inhibits root growth and penetration decreasing the oxygen in the soil. As the year progressed, a family full of noisy children trooped into the new home. They loved sitting under me and they threw their plastic bags next to me. This suffocated me and my roots got a rash making me swell with pain. There was even no protective fence around us constructed to protect our trunks and root system from future damage. As the year was coming to an end, I knew it was the time for the so called Christmas the ?festival of light? for the humans but ?festival of doom? for the trees. We were cut down and some of us uprooted during this time. Man has no idea that stressed trees are more prone to health problems such as disease and insect infection. Surely with all this so called development and constructions going on man should carefully plan and at least communicate with the landscape designers in order to protect trees. It?s a vital measure to be taken. And, ever heard of acid rain? That?s another story? |
