No Science Subjects for Grades 1 and 2 ???

by Bam Azores | 19-02-2013 13:18 recommendations 0

I am so sad! I  found out that our Philippine Department of Education decided last year to remove Science from its Grade 1 and Grade 2 curriculum all over the country. Why are they doing this? I learned to love Science as a little boy and got to understand concepts including those about the Environment when I was in first and second grade. The Secretary of Education said they want to make learning more "enjoyable" and the curriculum to become more "child-friendly". I don't know about that! I enjoyed all those fun things we did which made Science my favorite subject. And making it child-friendly will really depend on how the teacher teaches it. Can someone rethink this please???

I can say my love for SCIENCE and the ENVIRONMENT started a a young age...

Well...it's kind of sad... I remember as a 1st & 2nd grader, I participated many science projects and events at school which were quite fun and educational... -.-

    How sad :(
Although 1st and 2nd graders in Korea don't learn the subject "science", the subject is actually intergrated with social studies and taught in the name of " wise life" ("wise life" is actually a subject in 1st and 2nd grade..)
Maybe the Philippine government could make a similar subject and teach them to young students..
Nevertheless, I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU THAT SCIENCE TAUGHT ME A LOT ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT.

Oh, it is kind of absurd. If science curriculum is recognized as difficult one, then Ministry of Education can change the contents to be more liked by children. Just simply deleting the curriculum away can not be a reasonable solution.

Anyway, you look really cuuuuuuuuuuute in these pictures~~

My advice : don't be so sad...rather than studying science as another subject, we all should learn how to build our scientific minds to tackle the issues in a more logical way...

Here's more on the topic: "

Education Secretary Armin Luistro had clarified, however, that science concepts will still be introduced to pupils in grade 1 and 2. "We will be integrating topics in other subjects to make the new curriculum more child-friendly," Luistro has been quoted as saying.
In separate tweets Monday, DepEd also noted that the absence of science in early elementary grade levels is not unique to the Philippines. "Among Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, only Brunei teaches science separately in grade 1," DepEd said. "The rest do so beginning grade 3 or 4," it added, citing research comparing the Philippines' curricula to that of its neighbors. DepEd further noted that the Philippines allocates more time to science education out of the four countries compared.
