Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA)

Today I would like to introduce an international organization related with marine environment in the East Asian region. Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) is a partnership arrangement involving various stakeholders of the Seas of East Asia, including national and local governments, civil societies, private sectors, research and education institutions, international agencies, and donors. It pursues protecting life-support systems and enabling the sustainable use and management of coastal and marine resources through these partnerships. It is also the regional coordinating mechanism for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA).

(The SDS-SEA is a package of principles, programmes, instruments, and implementation approaches providing regional implementing frameworks and strategies for achieving the goals of key international agreements and action plans such as the UN Millennium Development Goals and the World Summit on Summit on Sustainable Development Plan of Implementation)

According to its promotional resources, PEMSEA?s four main !--object--ives are as follows.

To strengthen consensus among partners on approaches and strategies for addressing the identified threats to the environment and sustainable development of the Seas of East Asia

To build confidence among partners through collaborative projects and programmes

To achieve synergies and linkages in implementing the SDS-SEA among partners

To reduce in-country and regional disparities in capacities for sustainable coastal and ocean development and management

For these !--object--ives, 8 major areas for programme and project development have been identified and PEMSEA is striving for achieving its goals.
