Silvopastoral-fishery as Blue Economy Pathway for Sustainable Environment |
---|
Nowdays, the coastal areas in Indonesia are confronted with a serious problem, namely degradated mangrove ecosystems due to converted mangrove forests into fishponds. In the long run, there are apparently some abandoned fishponds not managed by coastal farmers, so that it is needed a specific technology to conserve mangrove resources and to enhance economic gains to coastal farmers.
That strategy is silvopastoral-fishery with combining the realm of forestry, pasture and fishery, and focusing on blue economy concept which is to gain the ecological benefits, social benefits, and the economic benefit. It is like integrated mangrove–shrimp culture systems that are well established in Asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. However, the new strategy adding pastoral system in silvofishery has been not implemented previously.
The bright business ideas of silvopastoral-fishery are the involvement actively of society to conserve mangrove ecosystem and the establishment of social entrepreneur. Both of those ideas constitute an innovation in its design or model and management involving the blue economy concept. The design used is an unusual method with combining forestry, pasture and fishery in the same area and management, whereas to manage it, it must be used integrated system. That concept must be implemented to achieve the sustainability of environment so that the profitability of business can be attained.
The technology is very simple, where it can be done in some abandoned fishponds in coastal area with applying forestry, pasture and fishery system. The mechanism is by firstly planting multipurpose species of trees and mangrove trees in special site. The silviculturist or farmers can choose local species of trees to be planted. For instance, in Indonesia there are albasia and acacia which are so easy to be cultivated based on site quality.
Then it can be continued by cultivating grass and brush on surrounding trees or the mangrove leaves can be used to feed cattle. In fact, farmers in Karawang have used those leaves for growing up some cattles of being fat. In other hand, fallen leaves from mangrove grown on the platform supply natural food webs in the integrated system.
After that, after implementing forestry and pasture system, the management of fishponds must be well continued because it will influence the yield of fish. The farmers also are able to culture various aquatic organisms such as crabs, fish and bivalves using various production practices.
Blue economy concept can justify the benefit of silvopastoral-fishery because it is able to embody sustainable environment. The three pillars of sustainable environment which are economic, social, and environment will be able to improve the life quality of farmers. The concise benefits, ecologically, the above system can maintain and conserve the mangrove ecosystem. It also improves the biodiversity of flora and fauna.
In the social benefits, it is able to increase the welfare and prosperity of community. It also can strengthen the life quality directly and indirectly through alleviating unemployment. Meanwhile, economically, this system can increase the income of farmers and increase the productivity of fishes and cattles cultivated. The above is one of applicable systems to achieve sustainable environment in Indonesia. Hopefully, it can be a effective strategy to grab the continuity of blue economy boomed by government of Indonesia recently. |

What a great idea from deep insight. This article reminded me of the beautiful coastlines of Indonesia. I wish we can enjoy the beauty of the coasts for long long time keeping it from being degraded.
