Saving Water

by | 30-03-2013 08:54 recommendations 0

Sometimes people tend to think that if you want to make a positive impact you have to do big, huge things. We tend to think that big projects with lot of funding are what make a difference. Although big projects have a positive impact, we should never forget that small, concrete actions have a positive impact too. The World Water Day in Bolivia was celebrated with that kind of events, somewhat ?small?, but with a great impact.

March 23rd marks the World Water Day, declared by the United Nations in 1992. This day have to make us think about the importance of that natural resource and what actions we could undertake in order to raise awareness in our communities about it. In Bolivia, in the city of La Paz there is a volunteer-run organization called VAM (Voluntariado Ambiental Municipal) which is managed by youth volunteers with the cooperation of La Paz Municipality. This organization organizes activities related to the environment to raise awareness among young people about particular issues.

This moth, this incredible organization, organized a series of capacity building workshops for high school and university students related to the theme of Water. I had the opportunity to collaborate with one workshop and it was an incredible experience. The workshop was about simple home-based actions to save water, and it was successful. Something that called my attention was that participants were eager to learn and shared their own experiences in home-based actions to save water.

Saving water is very important. We have to act now in order to avoid the future consequences of irresponsible water use. And, in my opinion these kinds of actions contribute to creating a culture of responsible water use. I?m sure that all students that participated in the mentioned workshops will apply to their daily lives everything they learned. That?s what is important. To act day by day.
