Bogota River as a strategic ecosystem is the set of water bodies comprising rivers, reservoirs, lakes, wetlands, streams that supply the community living in this watershed of the environmental services. The use of these services provided by the watershed generates negative impacts, problems that are evident in the quantity, quality and availability of water resources in the country, which ultimately prevents build an axis of development and growth of the region, together with this system.

River pollution is being generated by agriculture, mining, home waste, industrial and services found in the basin, which accounts for about 26% of national economic activity and which lies approximately 19% of the population. The problem of the river begins at the upper but intensifies average of the basin.

Plans, projects and programs that have been made earlier in the Bogota River basin and in some cases implemented have not had the desired results. One reason is the lack of intercommunication and joint planning by the management entity of the basin. This is reflected in how local authorities have separate actions which currently has not brought any benefit to this in any of its political and administrative units.

Bogota River flows into the Magdalena River in Girardot (Cundinamarca). Magdalena River is the most important Colombian basin due to its size it has influence in 18 departments of Colombia and in its catchment area lives about 28 million Colombians. That is the reason that Bogota River and its management are of vital importance for the whole country. Despite its importance both rivers contain large amounts of pollutants that endanger the entire population depends on this. Decontamination Magdalena River would not be significant if not performed simultaneously a comprehensive management plan for Bogota River. This river flows into the most important river of Colombia and is the river of the country?s capital.

In conclusion it is necessary to create a development plan that integrates Bogota River different stakeholders and ensure their participation in the formulation of policies, programs and projects in the integrated management of water resources in order to be part of the change. Decontamination of river from the capital will improve the quality of life of people who are directly related to both rivers, Magdalena River and Bogota River.
