Water Day

by | 02-04-2013 12:20 recommendations 0

World water day was celebrated in Sri Lanka on the 20-22 nd March with a series of events under the theme ?Water Cooperation?. The events were organized by the national water supply and drainage board with the help and the guidance of the ministry. There main idea was to increase the number of people who are getting pure and healthy drinking water.

Sri Lanka is a tropical country where the country can be divided into three main geological areas namely: wet zone, dry zone and highly dry zone. People who live in the wet zone get rain throughout the year, hence the rivers in the area are full of water which results in pure drinking water for people. But the dry zone of Sri Lanka gets rain only from monsoon rains and therefore they have a dry climate over the year except for few months of rain. The rainwater from the monsoon rains are collected in tanks built in the dry zone. Then the water in the tanks are distributed among people for drinking and agri cultural purposes.

The people who live in the highly dry zone get a very low amount of rain water and most of the year they suffer with lack of good water. Especially in the very warm months such as April and August they have to travel thousands of miles in search of water carrying their little children.

The government and the authoritative bodies have seen into this issue and taken many actions in providing these people with healthy drinking water. Some of the actions include installing wells, tube wells, providing them with barrels of water etc.

The main aim and the utmost target of these actions is to provide safe and healthy water to every one and hence increase Water Cooperation.

@ Christy Lee... Most areas of Sri Lanka have a cool climate throughout the year since it is an island. But the highly dry zone gets a very low amount of rain...
