Youth Empowerment: Dynamics!

by | 03-04-2013 17:38 recommendations 0

When it comes to the categorization of stakeholders, a class of individuals, called youth, is a highlight. Youth- people falling under the age group of fifteen years to thirty years, in most cases- form a major part of a societal mechanism, due to the over-whelming share they constitute in the total population. Adhering to the notion, Youth can be regarded as agents of change, as ambassadors of social justice and catalysts for sustainable development on multiple levels. Hence it is imperative that they be channeled effectively (and fairly) in order to make use of their untapped potential.

To start with, I believe that one of the most important fundamentals for the prosperity of any society is to bridge cooperation between all the stakeholders and authorities.  In case of youth, the self-regulatory system of collaboration among all stakeholders- government, civil society, the media, educational institutes, kinship units etcetera- is critical. This will ensure that a feasible linkage is maintained, which in turn will be of indispensable assistance while addressing youth-related issues.

Without saying, it implied that a key agent for communal accomplishment is the availability of education, on qualitative and quantitative basis. Having that said, I believe that we need to move further than that: we must now initiate a core focus on the inculcation of matters falling under the vast umbrella of sustainable development in the academic curriculums, to make certain that the younger generations gain a central degree of awareness of pertinent environmental matters, and in turn, build-in the capacity to critically think to mitigate environmental degradation. Also, there is need to promote non-formal and informal education, by emphasizing its recognition and funding. In the long-term, a series of reformative measures will result in a positive trend of ?green? socio-economic configuration of the society.

Further, the vitality of Youth Empowerment is significant to be considered aptly. According to my viewpoint, one of the basic ways to promote youth empowerment is to guarantee that the role of youth in policy making drastically shifts from an observatory position to a consultative status. Thus, involvement of younger people in course of action will be magnified. It is crucial to develop transversal public strategies on youth that would substantially reinforce opportunities for skills and civic engagement. To incorporate priorities of youth in national development agenda is imperative as well. But why involve youth in decision making? The answer to this ostensibly simplistic question is defined by diverse statements. However, on a generalized note, it is worth mentioning that linking youth with policy making influence will be a source of gaining experience, proficiency, responsiveness, exposure and awareness as a whole.  In addition, the advent of novel ideas will enhance debate and will guarantee that youth related issues are fully dealt with. Together, political inclusion of youth will eventually lead to a movement towards public discourse and status quo evolution, which is bound to reap productive results. Precisely, since youth form a major part of a society, they have a direct right to formally voice out their demands, because categorically, youth empowerment is a prerequisite for sustainable development
