The project, aims at spreading awareness on solid waste management and the use of renewable energy with the help of biogas plants. These biogas plants are kitchen waste based biogas plants and are an excellent mechanism for biodegradable waste disposal. They have been operating successfully at more than 2500 locations all over India.

The intent is to generate awareness and help efficient & sustainable disposal of food waste in establishments like canteens, hostels, food outlet kitchens and the like. Food waste will generate biogas, usable for heating & (or) power generation. The remenant waste from the unit will be a deodourised organic waste usable as an agricultural manure. The plant whose use has been propagated for this project is called Shakti-Surabhi, a kitchen waste based biogas plant developed by the Vivekanada Kendra, Natural Resources Development Project (Vknardep). The first phase was kickstarted by visiting and understanding the various types of biogas plants that run on food waste and are installed in the city of Coimbatore, wherein a visit was made to PSG college of technology (ladies hostel), where the plant has been set up and is now functional, to put the technical details of the working and the logistics of setting up a plant in perspective. Another visit was made to RVS College of Engineering and Technology, where a model using tarpaulin sheet had been established. Stakeholder meetings have also been going on simultaneously, talks are already on about the feasibility of installing a community biogas plant for a group of hotels. A working model has been proposed to be set up for the local farmer markets. Talks are on with the Rotary Club for assisstance regarding the same.
