Shoot-to-Kill policy to deal with Poachers in Botswana

by | 20-05-2013 11:38 recommendations 0

According to the sources, the deputy speaker of the Botswana parliament, Pono Moatlhodi has called to count the bullets on the head of poachers targeting high profile species such as rhinos and elephants in the country. Such tougher stance against poachers came just days after Mozambique declared that the Limpopo national park lost 15 rhinos only due to poaching.  The increasing demands of wildlife products especially ivory and rhino horns in the market of China and Vietnam has created a fear of losing all the rhino population from Limpopo National Park. According to Moatlhodi, implementation of such violent shoot-to-kill policy is only the way to protect both wildlife and tourism industry of the country. It is very essential to protect wildlife which is the main attraction for most of the tourists who visits Botswana each year and is the best way to foster Botswana?s economic situation. In Botswana, the particular concern for rhinos and elephants is given in Kasane region of northern Botswana where high tourism activity is mainly seen due to wildlife activities.

The duty of extensive petrol in the areas where high incidents of poaching occurs mainly along the border of Zambia and Namibia has been given to well-equipped Botswana army and in addition Moatlhodi believes that giving permission to rangers, soldiers and police to shoot-to-kill while they are out of duty will be much more effective in tackling the poachers. Botswana seeks the proper growth of tourism industries leading to economic growth through the implementation of such tougher stance.

However, some conservationists are arguing that it is not a justice to line up poachers, put guns on their head and shot immediately. Botswana being only the democratic country of Africa since its independence, it is not fair to introduce such policy. It helps to create anti national feelings among the family members of those who are killed without knowing the reason of why they became poacher for few dollars. This policy prevents to gain further information about poaching. Actually they mean to say, the Real World is Full of Hate, Violence and More Violence is Not the Answer.

Actually it is the bitter reality christy. People become poacher just for few dollars just to solve their hand and mouth problems. Thus, conservationists are opposing the implementation of this policy.

We all know that high profile species are sold at great amount of dollars.
And the poachers get only few dollars for its reward.
Don't you think there's a missing link between the market and the poacher?
    What a tragedy!
