Mining in the moors

by | 28-05-2013 06:30 recommendations 0

The present environmental problems in the moors originate with mining taking place in these ecosystems mining is presented to more than 3000 meters above sea level that deteriorate and affecting ecosystem services provided by moors, such as regulation and availability of water, climate regulation, atmospheric, without the function of information that this important ecosystem provided. The moors are considered strategic ecosystems in the world and there are few countries that possess, yet protection given to them in the Colombia is minimal.

Currently the Humboldt Institute together with the IGAC is conducting a project involving the collection of information necessary for the identification and subsequent delineation of strategic ecosystems, moors and wetlands of the country. This information will be collected should protect these ecosystems, as currently is said that after the 3000 m not be performed mines, but gave no information and documentation of this, mining companies take this lack of information as an excuse to continue exploited without any control.

Mining companies that develop their activities in moors causing environmental damage, but also are harming the surrounding population. The populations receives air and water pollution from these, have left agriculture as the main activity of the municipality to change the mining and still are not getting any kind of royalties. This situation has led to social and cultural issues, causing poverty, which is to be the result of lack of food, for the loss of agricultural activity in the municipality and theft that is being done to these people of their royalties.

Recently in the newspaper was an article Mining Unfortunately Peoples written by Uriel Ortiz Soto, which states that people with mineral deposits in Colombia are identified with extreme poverty. The question that arises where is the money from the royalties of this people? This requires that the government take up the matter and ensure that the people get what they deserve and investigate the mayors and governors of the areas which are possibly involved in this crime.

Finally in order to ensure protection of strategic ecosystems moors is government intervention necessary to ensure fulfillment of the law. Change begins with justice, not just ecological, social level as well, because it has to ensure that the population receive royalties from mining in the area, at the same time to ensure water quality they receive, in this way to improve the quality of life of the community and protect moors.
