by | 09-06-2013 07:58 recommendations 0

UNICEF's Unite for Climate Programme in conjunction with The District Commissioner, Kitwe City Council, Mopani Copper Mines, COP Waste, Copperbelt Energy Corporation, Konkola Copper Mines and Copperbelt University together planned and hosted the World Environmental Week activities.
Activities planned for the week, starting with Tree planting which took place on Monday 3rd, where we planted over 500 trees in four secondary schools (which took part in the debate contest on tuesday) and one university. most trees planted where fruit trees in relation to this years theme: Think. Eat. Save: reduce your foodprint and at one of the schools- Helen Kaunda Secondary, the DC came through to officiate the events following launching them for all the schools before we visited them. The seedlings were provided by CEC and the Forestry department.
Tuesday 4th, we held a debate contest at the Copperbelt University's New School of Business, were we had four schools Helen Kaunda Secondary Vs Mitanto Secondary and Mukuba Secondary Vs. Chibote Girls Secondary. First team debated on the motion- Is environmental protection vital for the society and economic growth whereas the second team esculpated the motion- UN should prioritise poverty reduction over environmental protection.
And as much as it was a contest the debators brought out some valid points which served as a learning tool or form of sensitisation to the house of debate and on-lookers. I waas fortunate to be one of the judges along side with two others from COP Waste and Kitwe City Council.
And its World Environmental Day June 5th, and our participants from previous days activities turn up in numbers excited, we gathered in the middle of town where we knew could attract passerbys to join in our celebrations.  We set-up the PA system so that we could be as loud as possible started some music traditional dancers did their thing and we set on to announce our reason for being their and the activity we were going to do people stopped to listen then moved on but anyhow we carried the day- Konkola Copper Mine pledged 100pairs of gloves, Cop Waste pledged unlimited bin liners and CEC pledged 34 branded dust coats then we divided ourselves into teams of two cause we set to clean Matuka avenue and The City Square we occupied- i was apart of the team cleaning the city square. The Drama group we incorporated was called Sungo'umkoshi being translated in english- Keep your neck!We called the day after lunch and went home having learned and taught ourselves something about environmental preservation.
Thursday 6th, we had no activities planned except wait for the grand finale which was to come the next day.
The grand Finale, for the Copperbelt World Environment Day commemoration was held in Luanshya, a town located between Kitwe and Ndola cities. Here we had dignitaries from all over the province including Copperbelt provincial Minister who was the guest of honor and all the collaborating partners.
We marched through Luanshya town and the had exhibits and performances from various schools then music performers.
Its was really an amazing commemoration, i just wish i had the Tunza Banner we were going to align it on the marching parade but no hope is lost there are still more activities to come.
