Ganges-Padma River greatly changed

by | 24-06-2013 04:45 recommendations 0

It is all over known that the Ganges Basin is tha largest catchment of Deltaic Bangladesh. Once this river catchment was full of various & innumerable channels. But the current condition is that the flow radically reduced to very little  flow for the upstream changes in the discharge.

Now the time is to realize that the river is already dead which was a major source of water flow for the whole country.

TEG Ambassador recently visited the river on a occasion of Rotaract Club International. It was 17th May, 2013.

You know, these changes in river pattern occured due to the manmade structures over river like dam & barrage in the upland of Padma.

I am surprised to hear. Then how is Bangladesh managing the requirements of water. Is there any other main river?

I have studied about Sundarbans, the Ganga, Brahamaputra Delta and was taught that it breaks up into many channels at the mouth of the river before the river joins the Bay of Bengal. It is sad to sea this lifeline drying up.

Thank you for the vivid report. Isn't the Ganges river the most important source of water in Bangladesh?
