The much awaited Global Round of the World Scholars Cup 2013 was held with great zest and ceremony from the 19th -23th June 2013 at the American University Dubai(AUD) in the United Arab Emirates. This international annual event t involved the essential skills of Debating, Writing, General Knowledge and Teamwork from countries from all across the world. The World Scholars Cup revolves around the globe with their global round in different countries every year. This was an apt example of multi-cultural diversity as this year?s theme was ?A World In Motion?. We were very lucky that this time it was held in Dubai. It was a breathtaking scene to see 1600 children in numerous teams of 3 representing 200 schools from all across the globe in their native dresses and school uniform. This was a tournament that was taken part in by the cream of the students from different regions from all over the world through a tough selection process held in the respective regional rounds of the World Scholars Cup. The official mascot of the World Scholars Cup is the Alpaca, which is a simple yet sophisticated animal, humble yet intelligent creature and a cute but a smart species. There was a teddy Japanese Alpaca that symbolized that this was truly a global event. It was totally another experience to meet them, embrace them and interact with them as they told us all about the countries from which they came. It was mesmerizing to know that 24 countries participated enthusiastically in this event. Namely, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan , Kenya, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Turkey, UAE, United States, UK, Brunei, Bulgaria, China, Lebanon, Romania, Sri Lanka, Qatar, Hungary, Nigeria. Meeting them and getting know about their culture was a great exposure for all of us and it was indeed an amazing feeling, to dance with them, get our photos clicked with them and to get the souvenirs from their home country. Hand-made Bookmarks, Mobile holders, origami Alpacas, etc. were like icing on the cake. Besides the competition, there was a talent show in which the participating countries showcased their culture through a beautiful dance that made our jaws drop, for example, the Japanese dance, Chinese Dance, African Dance, Indian Classical and war dance, etc Overall, it was a wonderful event and we all enjoyed interacting with people from different cultures and getting to know about their lifestyle and culture. |
