Haze in the south east Asian Region.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono apologized to his neighbors after illegal forest fires in Indonesia shrouded parts of the region with hazardous haze, prompting Malaysia to call for a meeting of Southeast Asian ministers. (Bloomberg)
Smog has drifted north along Malaysia?s western coast after air pollution reached a record in Singapore last week. Some areas were officially classed as ?very unhealthy? or ?hazardous? today as Kuala Lumpur?s 88-floor twin towers disappeared from view.
The haze is a result of human interference into the natural system that mother nature has created. The root cause is the draining of peat swamp forests - this draining happens in Indonesia and in Malaysia even in Selangor. The main fires are now in Indonesia but I have seen them in Malaysia as well before. The fires that deliver the haze are under the soil - check out the pictures ... it is not really trees that are being burned down is the smoldering fires under the soil that keep delivering the thick haze. There is one simple solution to the problem - stop all drainage of peat areas. NO peat forest will ever burn if you leave it as mother nature created it. The water table is to high for the peat to burn! Only if the ever greedy human species starts the draining then 10 thousands of years of carbon storage of mother nature can be destroyed in weeks by fires that travel under the soil and that are very difficult to put out. One small fire can quickly spread to thousands of hectares of drained land. STOP ALL DRAINING OF PEAT LAND IN INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA - DRAINING PEAT LAND IS A CRIME AGAINST FUTURE GENERATIONS and it is damaging peoples health and the economy here and now. All the talk I see and hear seems to be not focused on the real root cause. The fires will return in the future until we STOP the DRAINING of PEATS.
The seriousness of the haze", in the South (Johor) 600 Schools closed and even some universities too in Selangor and and some other states of Malaysia.
Therefore it is imperative for the members in authority to help figure out the most suitable antidote fr this hazardous phenomenon.
