Biofuels: Friend or Foe

by | 01-07-2013 04:38 recommendations 0

The world's energy needs have led the society to develop or implement different methods of energy production, one of these are the biofuel that are liquid or gaseous fuels of biological origin, currently the most widely used fuels obtained from biomass such as bioethanol, biodiesel, bio-methanol, methane, and bio-oil components. Accompanied this development are generating different doubts and questions about environmental safety provided by these new energy alternatives.

Biofuels are one of the best options currently clean energy because it is a renewable resource that can be sustainably developed in the future emissions from the combustion are few, reflecting this in the percentage of emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxides, olefins, aromatics and hydrocarbons polychromatic. They have great economic potential, because their use would increase energy self-sufficiency in developing countries, such as Colombia, decrease import prices and offer better trade balance and balance of payments.

On the other hand one of the most frequently mentioned problems is the war for land use, Biomass cultivation or growing food? This is the current question on the use of land, because these interfere and affect international trade opportunities. Large-scale biofuel production requires large areas of land but many countries do not have the ability or opportunity to change the destiny of the land used for the production of food crops for biofuels. The biofuel production would generate serious problems of loss of biodiversity due to forest clearing which in turn generates climate imbalance.

Finally, the advantages and disadvantages have different emphasis on the problems, so it is difficult to figure out which of the two options is friendlier to the planet or socio-economically speaking, what is best for a country. Many developing countries could obtain funding from international financial institutions and regional development banks and sub-regional implementation of crops for biofuel production and its efficient development, but for this to be sustainable manner is necessary to analyze environmental, social, political, economic, and public and private sectors.

ya, there has arisen conflicts about land and other resources but i think biofuel is friend because nothing will be there without sustainable energy usage
