Bush Fires Entangles Ghana |
---|
Wildfires are known to cause severe damage to property and additionally increase substantially, carbon concentration in the atmosphere. Wildfires are one of the few natural contributors to climate change. In Ghana, there no significant wildfires but instead, there bush fires – caused by deliberate human actions. Bush fires was initially a high threat to the agricultural sector. About a decade ago, Ghana received support towards bush burning campaigns and education programs. Following that, there was a quick reduction regarding the frequency of bush fires. In 2016, as Ghana and other tropical countries experience the dry season (harmattan), there has been a sudden increase in bush fire occurrence and even, domestic fire hazards. In January, there were severe fire outbreaks at one of the country?s largest market places (Kumasi Central Market). A lot of food stuffs, clothing, cash, sophisticated items, and market commodities were destroyed – rendering hundreds jobless and vulnerable. Preceding this sad news, there were minor cases of fire outbreaks in urban centers and bush fires in rural areas.
In most rural areas, bush fires are caused by farmers who smoke during working on farmlands, others who set fire to burn a small portion of their bushy plots and usage of fire to hunt rats. These practices are much known to rural areas, especially, farming communities. In the process of hunting or setting up fire to cook while farming, the dry leaves catches fire and spread it. Ghana?s environmental restoration, protection and conservation is relatively minimal. There is a need for more committed environmental leaders to channel substantial resources to help curb all unfriendly lifestyles that deplete environmental resources and degrade environmental quality. In view of this, I have included a slide that highlights the effect of bush fires on climate onto my climate change presentation. When we teach our young ones to love nature, they will not only love but grow to live in harmony with nature. |

Thank you for sharing dear, bush fires are a serious threat to forest ecosystem and I can see the pictures that inform a real serious problem. I think awareness won't be suffisant but actions to protect the forests are a must.

Though wildfires haven't been a headache is Ghana, bush fires are posing serious threat to forest and land eco-system. As mentioned above, smoking and burning small plots to get rid of rats etc. are some of the main causes for bush fires. I believe enough consciousness among people is a must to decrease the incidence of bush fires.
Thank you for sharing dear Joshua :)

I very much agree that awareness should be raised on this issues, which hurts so much Ghana's ecosystem. In my opinion, we should create a global funding organization to supply each country with the facilities it needs, not only to raise awareness, but also to extinguish inevitable fire incidents that will occur, as soon as possible. Thanks for this report Joshua!

Bush fires are a serious threat to forest ecosystem. Awareness should be spread about it's harmful consequences and also if possible laws should be made to prohibit it . Proper monitoring or patrolling should be done to catch the ones who are the reason behind fire. And yes , environmental education at young age lays a very strong eco foundation and sets the right attitude towards environment. Thanks for the report.

In order to prevent the occurrences of Bush Fires in the future, proper training and awareness should be given to all relevant stakeholders. If possible, technologies should also be used to not only minimize the damages but also prevent them in the first place.

Joshua you are right that when children get in love with environment at a young age they grow to live with harmony with nature so it is imperative that youth know about the environment. I still remember when I planted my fist plant in my garden and desperatly waited for it to grow.
It is still there.
