GHG-Saving in Lifestyle |
---|
Many people identify themselves as GHG-conscious. They say that they have obligation towards the nature to pay their efforts in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas. However, it is often hard to do so in real life scenario. Certifications are sometimes very vague and does not supply enough information for the user. In Korea, there is a specific rules to deal with this situation called ?Carbon Emission Certification Program?. Using the data on carbon emission during manufacture, the certification recognizes products by both letting the consumers know the numerical data on how much carbon dioxide is emitted and awarding marks for low emission products. They compare each product?s carbon emission footprint with the average emission in producing such product. If some product does not emit any carbon dioxide in the production, the manufacturers can use another special mark to show that. Among the products that are certified, ?alcoholic drinks? do pose a peculiar situation, as most people do not usually think that some drinks have a lower footprint than others. Few drinks lowered the emission by raising the ratio of recycled bottles, introducing waste heat reutilization process, and raising efficiency of air compressors. Creative and innovative methods in each products have impeded the rapid destruction of the nature. However, the law still has some drawbacks, in that the companies feel burden in opting in the certification program. The certification agencies charge few thousand dollars for each product to test their criteria. The extra income from these certification, on the other hand, is comparatively miniscule. As a profiting-seeking entity, it is often hard for private companies to use their money in unprofitable certification programs. The solution is simple – people should be more aware in seeking for a product with such certifications. When a credible certification program is developed, consumers should prove that the effort paid by the private sector in keeping up with such criteria is worth doing so. Only when companies find profitable to help the Earth, they would continue to do so. |

I like the term 'GHG-conscious' and also the title of your report-GHG -saving in lifestyle. In our lifestyle , in day to day actions we should opt for alternatives with least GHG emission. we should genuinely be GHG conscious.
There should be awareness programs to spread awareness of such certification programs so that people know that something like this exists which can be referred to and compared to arrive at the most eco -friendly product(the one with least carbon emission-as per certificate). Thanks for an informative report.

so important

This certification is a very useful for the key stakeholders to assess the carbon footprint of producing a product. However, I think more awareness needs to be created regarding this, so the consumers can support product with lower footprints, which will eventually encourage all producers to decrease their Carbon Emission Certificate.

Certification of Carbon Emission is indeed an important parameter for considering the ecological footprint of a product. Consumers must be aware & conscious.
