by | 14-02-2016 20:48 recommendations 0

Taean-gun is a region of tidal mudflat located at the West of South Korea. In the December of 2007, there was a large oil spill where 12547kL of oil leaked into the wetlands. At the time, more than 2 million volunteers visited Taean to help clean the oil spill. As eight years have passed since the spill, the wetlands of Taean are now clean as they were before.

Recently, on the 31st of December, 2015, the IUCN, also known as International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, selected Taean-gun as one of the World National Parks. Taean-gun was classified in the category of V, which is the category for land and marine scenery protection area. IUCN reported that they chose Taean because of the effort to restore the environment and by giving Taean-gun a level of V, it also shows that they acknowledged that the ecological value, and that the state of management and preservation is favorable.

With Taean-gun getting classified as V, Dadohaehaesang National Park, and 3 parts of Deogyusan National Park were graded as Ia, the best rank in the categories of IUCN.

It is good to note that inspite of having suffered from large oil spill in 2007 , Taean-gun has manged to be classified as World National Park. It is a recognition for the efforts by concerned authorities. Thanks for sharing.

Oil spills are very harmful to the natural eco-system. In 2014, Sunderban forest, a UNESCO Heritage site in Bangladesh was harmed by an oil spill as well. It is really impressive to know that Taean was able to overcome it and eventually become a World National Park.

interesting! I'm new to the site and we here in the Philippines also witnessed a massive oil spill years back. I remember many people shaved their heads since hair was supposed to attract the oil molecules, and many Filipino ships carried nets filled with the discarded hair for use as a sponge to absorb the spilled oil
