Ahead of the 22^nd United Nations Conference on Climate Change which is about nine months away, the King of Morocco, His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, has approved appointments into the steering committee for COP 22.

The committee will be headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Salaheddine Mezouar, with support from other ten members of the committee which include  Abdelâdim Lhafi (commissioner), Aziz Mekouar (ambassador for multilateral negotiations), Nizar Baraka (president of scientific committee), Hakima Haité (special envoy for mobilization), Driss El Yazami (in charge of civil society pole), Faouzi Lekjaa (in charge of financial pole), Samira Sitaïl (in charge of communication pole), Abdeslam Bikrate (in charge of logistics and security pole), Said Mouline (in charge of public/private partnership pole) and Mohammed Benyahia (in charge of side-events pole).

The committee is tasked with the preparation and organization of the COP 22.

Meanwhile, the obvious and commendable high premium placed on a successful COP 22 by the king led to the creation of an inter-ministerial committee to assist in the entire organization of the event. The inter-ministerial committee have the ministries of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Interior, Agriculture and Fisheries, Industry, Commerce, Investment and Digital Economy, Energy, Mining, Water and Environment, and Economy and Finance as participating ministries. The king has set his sights on a landmark COP 22 and with strong instructions to that effect. He also urged the committee to involve every stakeholder to help make the event a success.

According to Maroc.ma, "The Sovereign also gave His high guidelines to reaffirm the different commitments of the Kingdom regarding the protection of the environment, development of renewable energies and the fight against climate change, and the defense of the interests of developing countries, especially African and small island State".

Morocco will also work with the French Presidency of the COP 21 to ensure that no stone is left unturned. It is a really great news coming from Morocco who recently switched on the first phase of the world's largest solar power plant. With preparation already started, we can only expect a landmark event in Rabat hopefully, with a landmark agreement.
