Air quality in India

by | 21-02-2016 14:27 recommendations 0

Last month I visited Delhi, the capital of India, and was disheartened by the condition  of air pollution in the city. Delhi is the most polluted city of India and it's air quality is the worst of  any other major city in the world! Poor quality air damages the lungs of about 50% of all the children i.e 2.2 million children of Delhi.
Pollution of any kind is a very painful, slow killer which kills living beings slowly and from the inside. Air pollution in India is estimated to kill about 1.5 million people every year. According to WHO, India has the world's  highest death rate from chronic respiratory diseases and Asthma and if  this is not terrifying , I don't know what is!
A number of projects, campaigns, awareness programs, rules and schemes have been launched and put into practice to control the increasing amount of air pollution in Delhi, and India. The government of Delhi has come up with a new Odd-Even rule which came into effect from January 1, 2016. This rule defines which car people can drive on a particular date. On even dates, only those cars whose number plates end with an even number can be out on the city roads and same is the case with cars with odd number plates. This has been done with a view of reducing the number of cars on the roads and also, reducing the carbon emission.

It is really disheartening to know about the rate of air pollution in the city of Delhi. Most persons don't realise the harm air pollution causes not only to the environment but also to their health. The government should put in place stricter measures to check industrial emissions too. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the great report! The even-odd rule looks like a great idea to decrease the pollution in the city. Industry seems to play a major role too in making Delhi so polluted, as other cities are very overpopulated too but not as polluted. I would say that if the government really needs to fight against pollution, it should regulate industry pollution, or use alternative ways for energy production, etc. If I am not mistaken moves have been done towards that way, but I think it should be the main focus.

Thanks for sharing! Well it is widelt known that Delhi's air quality is very low.
WIsh people can realize that air pollution can directly harm people's quality of LIVING too.
I believe that the people should cahnge their thoughts about pollution.
And the laws, rules, campaigns are just supporting the change.
It will take a long time for people in Delhi realize that their daily life is getting darker and darker by air pollution.

You are right Yagya. Unfortunately , my home city Delhi is not only the most polluted city in India but also counts as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Delhi government implemented this odd-even rule for a while to reduce air pollution. Their plan is to implement it again after 12th class Board exams in March. Thanks for the report.

It is really alarming to see the highly polluted air in Delhi. I have seen several videos and documentaries regarding the air pollution in Delhi and I really hope effective measures are being taken ASAP. Since poor air quality is not only harmful to the environment but also to the lives of the millions of residents.

    Dear Yagya,
Thank you for your report! It's really sad to see that Delhi's air pollution is really bad. My environmental management teacher showed my class a video on Delhi's air pollution once and it was very heartbreaking to see the sick people. Hopefully these projects, campaigns and new rules would make a difference in Delhi's air pollution. Keep up the good work!
