2nd Beach Clean Up Exercise

by | 11-03-2016 10:12 recommendations 0

On the 5th of March, a day before the celebration of Ghana?s 59th Independence day, Green Africa Youth Organization partnered with Seafront Environment to organize a clean-up exercise along the Baakano lagoon in Cape Coast.

This was yet another volunteering opportunity for youth within the community who are concerned with environmental sanitation. The clean-up exercise commenced around 7 am in the morning with leaders from each of the organizing groups leading volunteers to collect trash that has found its way to the beach and banks of the lagoon.

It was a tiring exercise – we walked almost 2 kilometres and gathered about 15 kilograms of waste – mostly plastic bowls and bottles. Plastics pose a huge threat to coastal organisms thus, very important for such exercise to be carried out frequently.

Comparing this exercise to a similar one we organized in 2014, there has been a variation in the quantity and composition of waste disposed at the beach. In our previous clean up and education program, we gathered over 50 kg of waste – mostly polythene bags, plastics, food leftovers, baby diapers, tissue papers, clothing, spoilt furniture, and other domestic items.

This change in waste composition and quantity inspires us to carry on with our environmental outreach events. We will work hard to protect the ecological health of ecosystems and the health of humanity.

Hi Joshua! I remember you from the previous post you uploaded! (thanks to the second picture :D) Seeing from the other pictures, it seems to be the beach has become a lot cleaner thanks to your team's effort! (Probably it MIGHT have saved sea animals from eating the garbage, to give a bit of an imagination) Hope you found the day very meaningful!

You and all those who got involved in this 'Clean Up' did a great job in cleaning the place and helping the environment. Last year 50kg waste against 15 kg this year shows people are becoming responsible in throwing their waste. Of course it is your achievement and the positive impacts of your campaigns as well. But still a long way to go. Ideal situation will be not to find any litter thrown around. Litter should be in designated bins only. Recyclables should be in separate bins. Thanks for sharing your great efforts. Keep it up.

Joshua, volunteer itself is meaningful, but I cannot praise you too much for volunteering and at the same time, saving the environment. 15kgs of waste, that is too much! Were those two activities done at the same place? If so, it may be interpretted that the beach is becoming cleaner, compared to last year's 50kg and your efforts are showing progress as well. Keep up the good work, and I truly wish Baakano lagoon can be clean as it had been before :-)
