DANDORA DUMPSITE |
---|
The Dandora dump site is an uncontrolled dumping site that contains very many hazardous materials. The dump lies 5 miles from the city center. It's located on the east of Nairobi, the Kenyan capital city. Sitting on approximately 30 acres of land and receiving garbage of over 2000 tonnes dumped on the site daily.
The type of garbage include industrial, agricultural and hospital waste. The Dandora dump site is dangerous as heavy metals such as mercury, lead and organic pollutants such as DDT and PCBs intoxicates the air and gets into the soil in the area. Medical wastes such as used syringes are also dumped in Dandora. A study conducted by the United Nations on more than 300 schoolchildren around Dandora showed that 50% of them experienced respiratory problems. 30% of the schoolchildren showed blood abnormalities that indicated heavy-metal poisoning. In summary, the dump site is one of the most outright violations of human rights in Kenya. The dump site is a source of life, illness and death. The rubbish pollutes the soil, water and air hence affecting 200,000 people. Workers on the site are exposed to hazardous conditions and are affected by anaemia, cancer, kidney problems and frequent miscarriages. |

it is appalling that even the other towns in kenya have no water, refuse and drainage management plans. We might have more dumpsites like dandora in many towns in years to come

John, I believe there needs something to be done to tackle such problem. Before there shows any children sick from Dandora dump site, the government should build appropriate building or such place to get rid of those trash. Thanks for posting and have a great day!

5 miles!? it's not enough to separate people from disease the dump site can incur. Seoul also had a similar problem decades ago and it's turned into a part where couples and families visit often in the weekends. But back then, I heard it was a huge disgust and even fire occurred from time to time because of the emitted gas from the trash. Hope the place will soon be cleaner and safer in the near future!

Such an unsafe municipal dumping site poses a serious threat to the health of humans and other living organisms and is also harmful for the environment . The situation of the dumpsite cannot be allowed to worsen but it has to be fenced and closed. Various stakeholders must come up with alternatives which will address both the environmental and economic effects of the dumpsite. Thanks for sharing. Hope the situation gets better soon.
