Nuclear power over fossil fuels |
---|
| India | The chairman of the atomic energy commission and secretary to the department of atomic energy, Dr Sekhar Basu has pointed out the pollution caused by fossil fuel for power generation . He also explained the role of nuclear power in minimising the impact on environment. Fossil fuels always effect the environment poorly but nuclear power has less of impact on the environment. In His two day visit to Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI) situated in Allahaband , he interacted with the senior scientists of the institute, the senior official touched on a wide variety of areas where nuclear science is of importance to the country. He also told about the popular misconceptions about radiation from nuclear power installations, pointing out that the natural radiation that each of us receive per year is several times what one would receive by living near a nuclear power plant. He then you highlighted how radio isotopes play a crucial role in medicine, particularly affordable cancer treatment in development of bacteria resistant crop varieties and in industry. He also emphasised that there is a highly developed indigenous technology in the nuclear sector and power generation can get a boost if more uranium were to be available, either from sources currently being explored in India, or from abroad by mechanism of nuclear deal.

Tanverjit, nuclear energy is one of the ways that we can at least less pollute our Earth. I totally agree with what you have said, but before complimenting on the positive sides of nuclear energy I would wish somebody to debate on the side effects as well. Nuclear energy is clean, but it had caused a number of disasters when poorly taken care of. Anyways, thanks for posting and have a great day!

Thanks Taverjit for another story you bring. Yes I'm on the same page with the lecturer. If we are to convert to other sources of generation so rapidly, only more pollution will be emitted. So for the near future i'm skeptical if there can be any other options that can replace nuclear energy but i really hope we all will be able to bask in the new, safer way of generation! (sounds like an SF novel though haha...) thanks for your thoughts!

I agree that nuclear energy is the most efficient source of energy. On the contrary its use might be hazardous as dumping of nuclear waste has long term effects on the environment and people. If a concrete nuclear waste management is used, then its use is a much welcome idea.

Nuclear is indeed one of the most efficient power sources on earth. A few days back i read an article that said something like a small portion of Uranium chemical is able to generate enough power to run a small town or sort. Uranium must be adopted to fulfill the rising demands on the power supply but precautionary measures should be taken as Nuclear chemicals are unstable as well as radioactive.

Nuclear Energy is one of the most efficient sources of energy and is most cost competitive as well. Let's hope more and more nations (including India) adopt this highly efficient power source with enough precautions to avoid nuclear disasters. Thanks for sharing.
