Surabaya Environmental Expo |

Brand new, Surabaya Environmental Expo was held on 23rd April in Balai Kota Surabaya. This event was organized by Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Lingkungan (HMTL) ITS or student organization in my major. I already being part of it by 3 years, and this year I become secretary of this event. Surabaya Environmental Expo was one of sub event of ENVIRONATION 2016, and first time held in this year. Correlating with this year Earth Day theme, Trees for the Earth, we gave away some baby trees to society. The trees mostly are flower or herbal plant which usually planted in garden. To make them easier to plant, we also put some instruction about how to plant the baby tree. In hope, they will truly plant it in their home. To celebrate Earth Day, this event also makes free emission test for cars. Not only society, but police and taxi also joint the test! For those who passed emission test, we gave them a sticker. From 309 cars, about 82, 85% passed and 17, 15% failed. And most of the failed one was diesel cars. We close this event by signed a petition about emission reduction for Surabaya free of pollution. The committee and guest (from other community) signed them altogether. Even though this event made for celebrating Earth Day, but this earth won?t stop getting sick if we still produce many emission and cutting trees all over the world. So let?s celebrate Earth Day everyday with many small steps like use reusable bag or bring tumbler. |

Dear Minjoo and Heonjun,
For those who failed the emission test, we told them about the result and suggest them to service their cars. As convince them to change their cars is quite hard.

Dear Dewi, first of all congratulations for being the secretary of Surabaya Environmental Expo 2016. I am sure the expo was impact oriented and felt glad to know about the distribution of herbal/ flower plants and free emission test for vehicle.

Well, we also have(Korea) environmental expo in October. But, I don't think I saw an idea like this! Free emission tests!
I believe you learned a lot from there. :))

That's a great way to encourage participation, Dewi! The same question just popped up in my head too! What kind of measures will be taken for the cars that failed the test? Though I guess there would be no compulsory measures otherwise no car owners will show up for the test :p Thanks for bringing us this interesting story and hope to see you again next month!

This sounds amazing. Really happy to hear about this initiative. Emission checks are important in order to ensure vehicles do not emit harmful gases beyond the accepted level as a lot of cars these days malfunction and cause more emissions than the desired level. It was a nice report :)

WOW! What an initiative by Surabaya -free emission check.
We should adopt sustainable practices, have regular emission check of our vehicles and plant trees as much as possible to make Earth Happy and to give a real gift to Earth on Earth Day. Thanks for sharing.

Dewi, giving out free emission test is one of the fantastic ideas that I have ever seen from a green eco promotion. I was wondering how you dealt with ones who had cars that failed the emission test. Did you convince them to change their cars, or informed them about how emission is harmful to our environment? Hope you had a great day celebrating Earth Day!
