Attended the 66th UN DPI/NGO Conference!

by | 05-06-2016 13:57 recommendations 0

I Apologize for not having been staying connected with TUNZA family for past couple months. I?m glad to come back with lenient schedule I was able to plan for summer (Junior Naturalist camp, Nature photography class, and Wildlife camp) as well as get started on finalizing the Nature book process. (I?ll post article about it once those events get close!)

This week, I attended the 66th UN Department of Public Information/Non-Governmental Organizations Conference in Gyeongju from May 30th through June 1st. This conference focused on the 17 Sustainable development goals made to be implemented by 2030 Agenda, which was adopted by United Nations Member States in September 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure human rights and prosperous and fulfilling lives. The 66th DPI/NGO conference was hosted by NGO/DPI Executive Committee, the NGOs, the Korean Government and the National Organizing Committee of Korea. The conference was held in Gyeongju, which is the capital city of the Silla Dynasty that united Korean Peninsula for the first time in the History and is a UNESCO World Culture Heritage site.

Divided into three-day event, the conference was held under the theme of Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Together. We had opening and closing ceremonies, 4 roundtables with special roundtable introducing Saemaul Undong experience from Korea. We also had interactive Townhall conference and numerous workshops prepared by participants. In the free time, we were able to look around various exhibitions that introduced different NGOs.

Held for first time in Asia, this conference meant a lot to me. I was able to go back to my mother country, Korea, and meet my dad. I had such valuable conversations with UN officials, ministers of various countries, and NGO?s CEOs all around the World. I was also pleased to introduce TUNZA eco-generation to experts and explain what we do.

The 66th UN DPI/NGO conference was based on the SDGs and Paris Agreement to create Gyeongju action plan to achieve these goals by 2030. Now that I introduced general information about this conference, I would like to talk about the discussions made during the conference and participated NGOs that all relates to Environmental protection/conservation and Climate change. Please check out future articles to be posted soon!

    @Heonjun,
    I believe so too... but on the other side a lot of NGOs are passionately protecting our environment doing what they can do the best :)) I mean, it's always to see improvements, right^^ the whole purpose of our convention was to not only 'plan' sustainable goals that world leaders all around the world together, it would be meaningless if only planned... we met to plan specific plan to actually 'achieve' this goal and so hopefully these 'plans' will be applied to majority of governments including the Korean Government ( a lot of officials were there so I hope that the meeting was meaningful to them as well and that they were motivated enough to start the change!)

    Great to hear you had such a wonderful time here in Korea. However it is a sad reality that the government's policies are not coherent to what they've planned and announced to the international society. There has been a recent study on the air quality in Korea by NASA and the results indicated, unlike the previous assertion by the government, that much of the pollution and dust are generated in Korea. Thanks for sharing and again glad you had a good time!
