Firstly, I would like to wish all my fellow Eco- stewards a very happy World Environment Day (WED) 2016. Needless to say, each day is environment day for eco- conscious youths like us but 5th June (WED) holds a special significance in marking the day with diverse celebration globally. For this year, UNEP chose the theme 'Fight for the Illegal Wildlife Trade'. In this report I would like to explain about way of my celebration.
In my hometown Chitwan, Nepal a weeklong celebration was organized by Bharatpur Sub- metropolitan city coordinated by Nepal friendship Society (NFS), Chitwan Green Lions Club in collaboration with many other local organizations and community groups.
Here is the list of event organized during the week:
30th May, 2016: Cleanliness Drive, Chaubiskoti to Lionschowk
31st May: Weeding and plantation in Shiva Temple Periphery, Bharatpur
1st June: Cleanliness Campaigns in schools within the Municipality area
2nd June: Enter school Speech Competition
3rd June: Interaction on conservation and promotion of Rhino Lake
4th June: Plantation at Bharatpur- 07, Marsyangdi Community
5th June: Rally, Sanitation around Narayani River bank and formal closure of weeklong celebration
Due to my hectic academic schedule I could attend the celebration only on 4th and 5th June. On 4th June, different species of plants were planted on roadsides of Marsyangdi community with active participation of community people. 50 plants were planted in total. On 5th June, grand celebration was held with participation of hundreds of people including women's group, government officials, police force, youth groups, media persons and collaborating NGOs. Green Rally started early morning nearly 7AM Nepal Time from Bharatpur Sub metropolitan city leading to Narayani River Bank (nearly 1.5 km long). It was encouraging to see public from diverse background coming together for the celebration. I really the serene atmosphere of river bank while picking up the trashes. The river bank was comparatively cleaner than it used to be few years ago as the river bank management committee is actively working to promote the area as a place of public attraction.
In this way I enjoyed celebrating WED2016 with my fellow mates in my hometown.

Hi Bindu! Nepal is a country blessed with breath taking scenery everywhere. I loved how every sight I look at is full with color green. Though I did find that in the Himalayan region, waste is not properly disposed of and buried almost anywhere. I guess foreign tourists take large part of the cause but anyway it would be lovely to see greener and cleaner Nepal!
