Nigeria Holds Afforestation Stakeholders Meeting as Forest Decline Hits 4 Percent

by | 12-06-2016 23:20 recommendations 0

The Nigerian Environment Minister, Amina Mohammed, on the 4th of June, 2016 conveyed an afforestation stakeholders meeting to discuss the decline in Nigeria?s forest. The country has been repeatedly named as one with the highest deforestation rate globally with about 4 percent forest cover which is 21 percent short of the international standard as established by the Food and Agricultural organization.

The Minister described the situation as an emergency one saying that her ministry will pursue afforestation with the aim of planting economic trees with everyone involved to ensure the sustainability of the project even beyond the present government.

The Minister who stated that the 3.5 percent annual deforestation rate by Nigeria was unacceptable insisted that the country will hardly achieve her afforestation goal if everyone is not involved. Logging of woods for timber exports, use of fire woods in cooking and use of woods for construction are some of the factors responsible for Nigeria?s continued forest decline.

We need to collectively tackle this challenge if we must find a solution. People must begin to think about the consequences of their actions as responsible citizens.  The meeting alone is a great sign of what is to come and hope Nigerians embrace the good initiatives of the new Environment Minister.

Udeh, sad to hear the Nigerian forests are in the stake of deforestation. I hope all citizens and political parties collaborate to solve this environmental issue. The government should also persist on finding alternative energy sources that can used in households instead of wood. Strict banning on logging should also be held. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

In addressing environmental concerns on the modern era, involvement of the community is seen to be one of the most significant steps towards a successful and sustainable implementation program. Hence, we can surely commend the prime minister's call of action and see it as a great example. So to you Udeh, thank you very much for sharing! All the best! :)

Thanks for writing. Though I think juxtaposing a particular country to the global standard would not always be able to put out accurate conclusion, i do agree the deforestation rate in Niger seems to be especially notable. And it's a good thing that the ministry is aware of the severity and is planning to tackle the problem. Thanks for sharing and have a good day

The fact you mentioned about 4 percent forest cover in Nigeria is quite shocking. It's great how the Minister acknowledges the fact and strives to solve it instead of being just a bystander. We all need a powerful leader to lead into a progressive world. Thank you for the report!
