California's Recycling Practices

by | 21-06-2016 14:51 recommendations 0

This month?s topic is Recycling. I was hesitant to write about one side of recycling because in America, there is variety of recycling going on. After taking considerate thoughts, I decided to introduce the way Americans practice recycling as well as the different types of recycling we have. Before I start, I would like to inform everyone that the rules for recycling differ for every states and regions.

Here in California in Los Angeles County, we collect trash, Green wastes (dead plants or grasses) and recyclable waste separately every Thursday. Fascinating thing about recycling here is that we get certain money back for recyclables we turn in at Recycling center. Ralphs, for instance, has its own recycling center and lets customers buy foods and goods from the credits they got through recycling. Because recycling wastes can lead up to considerable amount of money when collected over time, recycling often serves as one of the frequent fundraisers for high school clubs to earn money and do something nice for our environment at the same time.

Waters are also effectively recycled. Taking California as an example, California is known for its severe drought continued for several years now. So what we do here in California is that we recycle water for mostly for irrigation covering nearly half of the recycled wastewater, for production in the factories and even for drinking purposes. This is done through water treatment plants rapidly built in California. One I?ve visited in Stanford, CA area, for instance, had 4 steps in recycling regular wastewater into drinkable water using ultraviolet (uv) lights and mono particles.

Also, regarding the practice of recycling, America has America Recycles day on November 15th every year. This is the day where diverse group of kids, student organizations, adults and environmental conservation groups promote recycling through various means. People uploads video reporting their activities, take pledges and share their stories on social media how they take part in recycling.

(I would like to add comments regarding Bustomi's request on the picture sources. The first picture of me putting soda bottle is the recycling machine to weight recycables. We get the money back in receipt form where we present it at the store to buy goods (second picture) Another comment I wanted to make disregarding the picture is that I feel like our recycling system is pretty well set up because majority of people practices it so well!)

    Minjoo,
    I like to think of it this way each state is like a little country, and we're all united under one organization- like United Nation or EU!:) so yeah definitely we vary a lot.
    Money earned through recycling, especially when done by students, are used for good causes so its even better! Have an amazing day as well!

    Yuna, it is interesting to know that recycling systems vary from state to state I guess it is because it is difficult to unify into one single program due to diverse environmental and urban situations. Earning money from recycling is a good idea here in Korea, it was easy to see people selling their waste a few decades ago. (I am not sure if there are practices going on now.) Thanks for sharing California's recycling management, and have a great day!

    @Heonjun,
    yeah it really depends on where you are, but in california environmental protection is taken seriously :) especially my city is well known for its conservation/clean surroundings/etc.
    One example to use, our city use to have really bad air quality up to the point where we couldn't see streets ahead but now its so clear that we can see hundreds of stars everynight :)) its very nice here

    Thanks for posting Yuna! So I guess there's big difference between states in terms of recycling system. When I visited New York right after my Korean version of SAT years ago, I was surprised to see so much waste heading straight into dump trucks not even recycled. But I assume, seeing from your report, the systems are not unified and in some states recycling is taken seriously. Good to know and thanks for posting!

    @Adam,
    I think it's pretty common for us to do it this way, but I'm not sure about the other cities.
    Torrance practices environmental conservations very well, but I'm not sure even if other cities in California does this because it really depends on region and states since we all have different laws and regulations...
    But yeah I definitely think its very fascinating for us to recycle everything in every possible way :D

    The idea of recycling not only materials such as plastic, metals, paper, etc. but also natural resources is quite interesting especially when natural disasters strike. This should practice should be done in other parts of the world as well and as a result, we have to spread awareness. Thank you for sharing!
