Raising ants in replacement of using pesticides to reduce insects |
---|
This idea is developed by a farmer, named Doan Van Le from Dong Nai, Vietnam. As realizing that using pesticides in the long run will cause many health problems to consumers, he decided to raise yellow ants. According to Dr. Pham Hong Duc (lecturer of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry), scientific name of yellow ant is Oecophylla Smaragdina. This kind of ant is harmless to plants. However, they are able to fight again many insects. That he came up with the idea of raising yellow ants is quite coincident. He was suggested to raise yellows ants by Mr.Phuoc when that teacher visited his garden. Mr. Le found many ways to bring ant colonies to his garden. He faced many difficulties in the beginning. It took him three years to make ants settle in his garden and he accepted low productivity during this time. However, after three years, his garden was protected by ants and insects never had chance to damage his trees and fruits. Even though he has not used pesticides, he still has bump harvest. By raising yellow ants, he not only saved a great amount of money for not buy pesticide, but also harvests safe fruits to sell. But the most important thing is he can keep biological balance. I really appreciate the method of raising ants to reduce pesticides. I hope this method will be applied in many other places in the world so that the consumers will never worry about the fruits they eat. Yeah they also say that if there are ants in the house, you don't have to worry about cockroaches. Eco friendly technology like this can be beneficial to both humans and nature. Thanks for writing!

You're right, Arushi. In Ghana, farmers depend on lots of pesticide from China. If there can be a mass production of bio-pesticide, I think it will help secure underground and surface water in countries like Ghana. Thank you so much for enlightening me with this report, Thao.

This is bio-pesticide or sustainable method of getting rid of pests. The most ecofriendly alternative to chemical pesticides. I learnt a lot about it through my chapter in Biology. This is one of the key aspect of organic farming. Thanks for sharing.
