Why Do You Keep It? |

Despite being a teenager & an Eleventh grader I did not realized that I was keeping so much of the stuff neatly stacked in the deep cupboards of my house [never used since past many years] until this campaign caught my attention. Yes this was an initiative by Government of Dubai, Land Department to give your old Toys a new life. It was aptly titled ?Why do you keep it?? All items [stuffed toys, educational toys & electronic toys] in clean & good condition to be donated to them.
This is another form of recycling where all you old but in good condition toys may be donated & subsequently handed over to the needy. Imagine a little girl playing with your teddy bear or a toy that was just packed & kept in the cupboard & never used for years.
I gathered all these toys & teddy bears. Trust me, readers it become a sack full of teddy bears [all very innocent looking cute adorable pieces, close to my heart]. Some were my birthday present, some were prizes, some other gifts. This was followed by a basket full of educational & electronic toys. All in perfect working condition. I took care to replace all batteries & gather the chargers & other accessories so that each toy is in a working condition and thus, may bring a smile on an innocent face. As a parting thought, last time, I played with all, kissed them goodbye, neatly packed them & handed over to the Emirates Environmental Group [EEG] for subsequent hand over to the Dubai Land Department.
As I entered the EEG office with my stuff all the staff was very happy to see such a neat & beautiful collection. I was elated to see their response & happily handed over all to them. Apart from this stuff I also carried papers & plastic recyclables as well, neatly packed.
Besides this there was another campaign of EEG Project Recycle. Reforest. Repeat. I participated in this as well & contributed 305 KG of newspaper collected over 1 month. Readers, I encourage all of you to come forward & organize such campaigns in your respective regions. Share your smiles with other needy kids. You might be having similar items in your house. Please gather them, arrange same from your friends & peers & neighbors and donate them to some NGO or other needy children. You will have free space in your house & your items will bring joy on many faces.
All recycling is not limited to paper & plastic. This is another novel recycling where your undesired items are used by others. Sometimes we just throw them away & this eventually land in the landfills. Please save landfills & try to divert waste from landfills as much as possible.
Thanks for reading. |

Thanks Heonjun for your update on Korean initiative. Recycling is my passion & I'm thankful to UAE for providing a platform for the same.

I like your sharing, recycling series! I also like it very much that there's a project for sharing for reuse! To give you an example here in Korea, there's a shop that you can donate your personal belongings and then the company cleans the goods and sell them in cheaper price. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Xilola. Make a beginning my friend. counting starts from 1. First 10 KG is tough, if your efforts are sincere you will meet rather exceed the target.
Please do share the report on your campaign.

Thanks Arushi. If all us empty the space from unwanted stuff, it'll spread happiness all around.

Woow! Great job Rohan Kapur. We have an Uzbek proverb '' If you give 1, you will get 10 '' You did such a great job. Also, I loved the neat way you packed all your donations. Its sooo nice of you. And, I can't even imagine myself collecting 305 kg of recyclable paper in only 1 month. Keep it all up.
We have a lot of good toys too and your article made me say '' Maybe its time for our toys to have new owners?!'', but then, I remembered how one of my neighboors ''played'' with the toy I gave her for 1 week, and got a bit scared. I hope I can open this kind of a campaign in my country and find good players for unused toys.
Thank you very much for sharing)

Well said and well acted Rohan. We all must keep checking and reviewing our cupbaords every fortnight or at least every month to ensure that things no longer needed are put to good use by someone less fortunate like you did. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.

Rohan, thanks for such a heartwarming report on recycling. It must have been hard for you to donate all those toys they are memorable beings, though you do not play with them anymore. There must be other children who are willing to be best friends with your toys. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

This is indeed a kind of recycling people don't preach as much! I am so happy to see you help enforce it :) This project inspired me a lot (I can relate to it so much - I have so much junk piled up) and I will definitely work on bringing this to my community! Thanks for sharing!
