Hybrid Taxis to Increase in Dubai

by | 15-08-2016 21:38 recommendations 0

Reading so much about UAE ecological footprint and other good reports from Arushi Madan and other ambassadors from the UAE, I decided to search more online and I came across this news.

The Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) will add 2,000 taxis to its fleet in the next five years, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Saturday.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of RTA, DTC operates roughly half of Dubai?s fleet of 9,500 taxis and will increase its presence by 40 per cent as part of its new five-year plan.

Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, recently approved the five-year plan of DTC projects and investment initiatives for 2016-21.

The plan also envisages a massive upgrade to DTC?s limousine and school bus services.

?The number of taxis operated by DTC is set to rise from 5,000 to 7,000 cabs by 2021, while the number of limousines is set to leapfrog by as much as 340 per cent from 113 vehicles to 500 vehicles during the same period,? said Al Tayer

He added: ?The increase in the number of taxis is required to cater to the growing needs of customers comprising residents and visitors as well as the requirements of hosting the Expo 2020 in Dubai.?

The five-year plan also includes converting 50 per cent of taxis into hybrid vehicles by 2021 as part of a master plan to curb carbon emissions in the taxi sector by 2 per cent as stipulated by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and the Green Economy transition.

According to the government policy, 50 per cent of the fleet of all the five franchises are required to comprise hybrid taxis. DTC has announced the number of hybrid vehicles will soar from 145 to 2,280 in 2021.

Thanks for sharing Joshua. It's a good move isn't it? With the current effort to change the popular cars to hybrid or other nature friendly cars, it wouldn't take so long to see cleaner sky in big cities. Thanks!

Minjoo, like I had stated earlier, Hybrid taxis will go a long way to help rather than just usual cabs. Additionally, the more public transport there is, the higher the chances that people would not drive their personal vehicles to work, school, etc. So it is a good initiative by the leaders of UAE

Joshua, thanks for sharing a nice article from the gulf news. I was first wondering how increasing the number of taxis can contribute to the environment, then I came across the part that certain percentage of it will be changed to hybrid ones. Still, we will be more delighted to hear about your own opinion towards the issue than simply reading the post!

Today, more people than ever accept the concept of a hybrid car so it has finally moved into the mainstream, but there are a few things to consider when looking at the big picture like Cost
One deterrent for buying a hybrid car is that retail prices are more expensive. While hybrids can save a lot of money on gas, making the initial investment is a bit more than some people are willing to make on the front end of the deal. A better way to look at it is as an investment in the future of our planet and to realize that you'll recoup the difference over time and in the long run save money.

    Environment
An advantage to hybrid cars is that they run quieter and cleaner than conventional cars. This along with their exceptional gas mileage makes owning a hybrid an attractive option.

The real concern with the batteries for many environmentally conscious folk is toxicity upon disposal. This doesn't need to be a concern because most hybrids manufactured today use NiMH batteries which can be recycled without a problem.

I the issue is finding a Win-Win solution. for this country. in as much as they want to propagate the message of environmental protection we have to delicately protect the living conditions of these people. While it may have a good impact on the transportation it will still kinda reduce the effect of harmful emission of gases into the atmosphere. well it think it is a good thing.

Thanks Joshua for taking so much interest in UAE's ecological footprint and various strategies and infrastructure it is putting to reduce the carbon emissions. Being in UAE, we get to read almost every 2nd day some new development related to sustainable development or eco-move. Government here is taking environment very seriously and is targetting to be one of the most sustainable countries in few years to come. Thanks again for your report.

Basically i think it's better to get to understand what a hybrid car is first, so the introduction of hybrid cars will lead to have other options of car propulsion i.e electric compartment using battteries. This will lead to less usage of the internal combustion engine and of course prime motor spirit (petrol) hence less carbon emission is reduced. I think this is a great initiative

From the report, the taxis will be hybrid vehicles, which is very commendable in relation to reducing carbon emission. thanks for sharing this great news.

But not all the cars will run on petrol/diesel - there are introducing electric vehicles. Sounds great to me.
