Green Sports initiative is recognized by UNEP in its current 10 year 

programme. Sporting activities involving environmental commitment 

have a very big role at the global level in securing recognition on 

protecting our planet. For example, The Olympic Movement has 

incorporated the environment into its charter, alongside sport and 

culture.

 

Recently Bank Muscat won recognition under Green Campaign of the Year award for its role in developing green playing fields across 

Oman and launching community projects targeting the youth. The 

initiative is aimed at contributing to sustainable development and 

protection of the environment, thereby ensuring all-round development in Oman.

 

The Green Sports initiative was started by the bank in 2012 together with the Ministry of Sports Affairs under a 5-year programme with the aim of developing a sporting nation by supporting sports clubs across Oman to green their playing fields. Local clubs have an enormous 

influence on neighborhood communities, mainly the youth group. 

Sporting activities involving environmental commitment are now 

playing a very important role at the global level in focusing recognition on protecting our planet. The initiative  helps to achieve sustainable

development and protection of the environment, thereby ensuring 

all-round development.

Sport can benefit the environment and sustainable development 

through its popularity. Sports stars wield an enormous popularity. 

They have courage, application, refusal to submit to adversity and 

leadership. Sport can become a powerful agent for change, showing other sectors and the general public the road to and the benefits of 

sustainability. Sport has the power to unite people with projects which benefit the natural environment and the community.
