ECOWAS Holds Regional Training on Green Climate Fund |
---|
After the Paris Agreement last year at the COP 21, a lot of countries, especially developing ones, were delighted to learn of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) which was to drive the process of implementing the agreement. But then, the process and eligibility for the funds were too complicated and rigorous for many. Many argued that the difficult processes may put of interested nations.
That probably prompted the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) to organize a three-day workshop in partnership with (GCF) at the commission's headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria's capital.. According ECOWAS website, the GCF Regional Advisor, Africa Mr. Alpha Oumar Kaloga, who spoke as a GCF Board Representative disclosed that "the African continent is especially targeted by the Fund so that its environment can stay free of emissions for all time.
He noted that "the purpose of the meeting is to create a 'target engagement' through bilateral meeting with each country in the region while the self-assessment tool is a key instrument for each country to take stock of the situation as well as a baseline to track the progress to be made towards an effective engagement with the GCF". The workshop which serves as a sequel to an earlier training in September 2015 was supported by Swedish fund. This is a very impressive initiative and I hope the GCF takes it further to other regions in Africa as the continent desperately needs the fund or her nations will continue to explore development options that will add more emissions to our environment.
