Old Goa is the home to India's second wax museum. The museum has over 30 life-size, statues of famous personalities of Indian culture, heritage and religion. The statues have been sculpted by Shreeji Bhaskaran, who owns the museum and is also responsible for giving India its first wax museum located at Ooty, Karnataka, which was set up in March 2007. A guide talks you through the statues at the museum and explains who the statues are of, what they represent and how long it took to make the sculpture. The guided tour is in English and Hindi. Making of a wax statue involves combining of computerised digital imaging techniques with the conventional sculpting methodologies. Depending upon the complexity of the procedure, the cost of making the wax statue varies between Rs 3 to Rs 15 lakhs, I was informed. It takes the artist between four to 16 weeks to make a statue and approximately 50 kilos of wax is used to make each statue. "The wax used is paraffin with some additives. Colour is added to the wax when in molten state and cosmetic colours are applied in the final stages. While the eyes and teeth are artificial, the hair used could be synthetic or natural. And clothes are tailor made to match the fabric and style," explained the Guide. It was a wonderful experience to visit the wax museum. |
