Mexico City's Air pollution |
---|
Mexico City is known as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Significant issues include Air pollution, lack of clear water, subsidence due to overuse of groundwater, and so on. From these various topics, I would like to talk about the city?s Air pollution.
According to the travelers, Mexico city?s air pollution is in such a bad condition that the visitors cannot recognize that this city is surrounded by mountains. It is estimated that ever since Mexico City has been rapidly growing, the air quality worsened. Relating to Air pollution, Times reported that the city?s Ozone levels are almost twice the acceptable limit set by the World Health Organization.
Public Radio International also reported on similar issue. PRI claimed that ever since more than a decade, the Mexico City?s government rang the alarm bells over its air pollution. The city?s air quality has generally improved in Mexico?s capital over last 20 years also, until its reached poor condition back to 90s. Back in 1990s, the locals often said that living here was like smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.
According to United States Environmental Protection Agency, Ozone forms when pollutants coming from vehicles, industries, or power plants( In Mexico City?s case, most likely from their industrial growth in 1960s) and that high Ozone level will cause various health problem due to bad air quality. In response to this, Mexico City decided to remove older and more heavily polluting vehicles, such as cars more than eight years old. However, the Environmental activists argued that this new rule encouraged more cars on the road and thus higher smog levels. Thanks for sharing, Yuna! Though I have never visited Mexico city before, I heard a lot that it is suffering from extreme air pollution. Those images do not seem very good. It may be harsh to live in such a condition. I hope the policies to remove heavily polluting vehicles will relieve the situation.

Mexico air pollution is really at alarming level, it's pathetic for people living there. Government should subsidise public transport and encourage people to use it more and more. Thanks for sharing.
