Why Finland is the greenest country in the world

by | 18-10-2016 15:06 recommendations 0

Finland was known to the world as the country which made Nokia phones and as the country that had the best education system in the world. But the nation kept on surprising the world as it became the ?greenest? country this year.

Every year, Yale University ranks all the top performing nations on the basis of their environment on factors such as how well the nations are protecting their ecosystems and human health. The Environmental Performance Index  also known as EPI, ranks the nations on the basis of the scores. This year, all top 5 nations are from Europe with Finland ranking in the top position followed by Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and Slovenia.

Finland  stood as the number one nation in this index because of its government?s and local community?s commitment in the 9 areas: climate, forest, water, sanitation, energy, biodiversity, air quality and health impacts.

The government has implemented several local campaigns and citizen initiatives which strongly reflects the nation?s desire to become a carbon neutral country by the year 2050. The ambitious government has developed goals which are measureable and actionable in terms of sustainability as per the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Even the national education system set by the Finnish government helps to nurture the children as sustainable future leaders as energy conservation, water conservation and environmental leadership are instilled through assignments and coursework.

Thus we can conclude that the Finnish government has set the right goals, right education policy and the right citizen engagement programs required to maximize environmental preservation and minimize harm to the environment. Such a commitment has made it the greenest nation of the world.
