Paper Bags or Plastic?

by | 07-11-2016 08:33 recommendations 0

A few days ago, I was on Instagram, one of the most popular social media sites, and I saw a post by Dr. Terri-Karelle Reid.

She gave a shout out to Toyota Jamaica, and I found it to be highly impressive and commendable as an advocate for Sustainable Uses of our resources.

The Use of Paper Bags against Plastic
We can all agree that paper bags are by far more environmentally friendly, but many are concerned about the increasing use of paper bags as this means that there will be an increased reduction of our trees. One however, may consider the thousands of years that plastics take to degrade. Truth to be told, they both have their fair share of disadvantages. Plastic Bags were created as an alternative to paper bags as a means of saving our trees. As it regards to reuse, paper bags tend to fail when compared to plastic bags which may be reused many times as they aren't easily torn and are waterproof.

Many countries have taken the initiative to ban the use of plastic bags. Based on the fact that they are made with nonrenewable resources being petroleum and natural gas. They litter the surroundings, floating around in drains and different waterways. They cause a serious environmental issue, because they take so long to break down, they affect life on land and sea. They are not easy to recycle and they are costly.

The United Nations Environmental Programme Secretariat recommends the ban of the use of Plastic Bags globally.

Take Action and Help Save Our Environment Today.

Hi Leneka! Good to hear a company putting efforts to show their willingness to go green! Also, by advocating their decision, just like your friend did on instagram, hopefully more and more companies will be tempted to follow the path. Thanks for sharing!

This is a big issue. If producers will not plant more trees to replace the ones being harvested to make papers, then paper bags wouldnt be the best idea. But for the immediate, we need to kick plastics out of the scene & resort to papers for now.

There are disadvantages of using polythene bags as well as paper bags. If we consider the life cycle environmental impacts of these two kinds of products, sometimes there may be a less impact from producing polythene bags than producing paper bags. Anyway, most of the people are not reusing the polythene bags and therefore the impact of using a polythene bag is higher than a paper bag. So, I think use of clothe bags is a good option and there is water resistant clothe bags also.

Very interesting article which leaves something to think. Thanks for sharing

Plastic bags being non-biodegradable are the most harmful-by all means. Paper bags, if are made from used newspapers or used magazine papers etc are a good option because we are not cutting trees to make these bags rather we are recycling used papers to make such bags. Having said that, I believe jute bags or cloth bags are the best and most eco-friendly option. Shoppers must always keep jute bag in their hand bag. Like here in the UK, we need to pay for plastic bag at retail store /supermarket if we need 1 so to avoid paying , people remember to always carry their own reusable bags.
    Thanks for sharing.

I think using reusable bags are the best option here. The problem with the reusable bag is that people will forget to bring it with them everywhere. However, it is the better option and hopefully, people will get used to it.

Thanks for sharing, Leneka! Paper bags and plastic bags both have advantages and disadvantages. From your article, I could realize that paper bags are not that environmentally friendly as I have thought, though it may a bit better than plastic ones. It may be best for us to use renewable bags(eco-bags that can be used several times) in daily life. Thanks for sharing, and have a great day!

I think it's time we find a permanent solution to the issue. Plastic bags are non-biodegradable and the use of paper bags is linked to increased deforestation. To me, neither fits the bill. I wonder if people would be interested in using sisal bags. Sisal takes a much shorter time to mature than trees do and the bags are much more durable than paper bags. Sisal bags can also hold much more weight than plastic and paper bags because sisal strands have more tensile strength. Additionally, sisal is a plant and there biodegradable.

There has been a greatly observable behavior that most people do not recycle the plastic they used. Moreover, ending up thrown in the vicinity of bodies of water, which threatens the existence of several marine species. With this context, paper will really be a better option than using plastic. So thank you for sharing this very awesome news!
