Typhoon Maring Hits the Philippines -August 19, 2013

by Bam Azores | 19-08-2013 13:04 recommendations 0

We are having another typhoon now. It is names Typhoon Maring in the Philippines but it also has an international name (Tropical Storm Trami).  We have had strong rains since yesterday and it does not look like it has plans of stopping soon. According to our Weather forecast, Typhoon will be in the Philippines until Thursday because it is moving very slowly and keeps changing directions, so that means it just stays on top of the country.

Classes have been suspended in many parts of Luzon Island, which is the biggest island in the country.  They had to suspend because there is flooding in many places due to the continuous rains.  In some areas, they have 1-foot floods and in some areas, it is even chest-deep.

Here in the Philippines we have a flood warning system. If they say orange code that means we have intense rains and red color means torrential rains. Right now we are already in the red code, which means we will continue to experience heavy rains that will lead to severe flooding.

Here are some pictures taken by my friend, Therese Ermita Asuncion, in the flooded areas near her school. You will notice the vehicle whose wheels are already covered half-way.  You would not want to be caught on the street walking in that deep water because it is very dirty and can be cause for illness. One of the common tropical sickness that comes from flooding is schistosomiasis coming from infected snails.

We are praying for the rains to stop now because many people are stranded and work and school had to be suspended.

Hello everyone! Thanks for the comments. It's sunny out now but classes are still suspended (a whole week of no school) because some areas are still flooded. The typhoon has left us but when the next one will come, we don't know. So just have to always be ready!
