Although it is a very important trasportation route in Thailand, Saen Saeb canal is not the cleanest and surely not the best place to go in and take a swim.
Now full of vibrant colored boats and litter flowing every where, believe it or not, the Saen Saeb canal was one of the cleanest canal in Thailand.
Before roads, we only have the rivers and canals to travel to many different places. People built homes near these rivers and canals. Children took a bath and go for a swim. But all these are in the past. My grandmother once told me that the Saen Saeb canal was so clean and clear you could see all the things under the water. All the fish swimming in it.
Now? It's the complete opposite. The only organism living there is bacteria. The smell was, well, very bad.
So, the question is, what made the once-clear and clean Saen Saeb river turn into this dirty, murky river?
The answer is simple Littering. Littering is one of the main causes of water pollution.
People have their estates near the rivers, and when they want to take out the trash, the easiest way to do is to throw them into the rivers and canals. They aren't aware of the major consequences following.
And it's not just the people who litter, it's also the officials who realized too late about the problem, and us that didn't care enough.
Just recently, that the plan for wastewater management came out. The officials promised that the Saen Saeb canal will be clean again by the nest two years. But is that possible? It might be, but to ensure that, we need to lend a hand too.
Wastewater management can be practiced anywhere. Let's start at our home. The first step is to separate our food scraps into a plastic bag. This will prevent the food scraps from clogging up the pipes and leading to wastewater. The food scraps can then be made into fertilizers for plants.
Just these little things can have a huge impact on the environment, just like littering.
All these environmental problems we are facing right now are caused by no one other than us our selves. Let's join forces and help make our Earth a better place.

Thanks for posting Chayanun. Clean river and stream can bring much bigger present for the locals. In Seoul we had a very dirty stream that once was covered with cement to build road over the stream and now after the destruction of the road it produces much more benefit whether that be economically . Thanks!

Dear Lariza,
Thanks, and I definitely agree. Two years might not be enough.

Dear Romansheeka,
I hope it gets better! Indeed that it's not easy to make the once clean river clean again, but if we work together I'm sure we can do it!

Dear Arushi
That is a very good point about the marine animals. I agree, this also concerns large water bodies. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing, Chayanun! It is very sad to hear that the river, once very beautiful and clean, has turned into a dirty one with no life. Though it may take a long time, there must be efforts to clean the litter and bring back life. Have a great day : )

I went to Thailand three months ago and the contamination of that river can be seen very clearly! I don't think two years are enough, but hopefully the government and the people will find a way (better sewage system and more awareness from the population) to take care of such an important water resource!

Its sad to know major water resources of the world are being polluted. Serious measures must be taken to prevent it.

Same case is here in Nepal.....Bagmati used to be our cleanest river in the entire country but now the situation is terrible. Various NGO's are trying their best to bring back the previous Bagmati....But its obviously not easy....And I completely agree with you....Chayanun...thank u for sharing

It's really sad that once clean Saen Saeb canal has become so dirty. You are so right -yes we all need to mind our waste disposal habits so that it does not turn up through pipes & drains into large water bodies (like rivers/ocans/seas) which can further cause harm to marine animals and sea food eaters. Thanks for the report.
