Collapse: How societies fail to succeed by Jared Diamond |
---|
Collapse is a book about the decline of societies and what are the factors that influence these societies to fail to succeed. In the book, the author highlight the ecological problems that influence the decline of societies. Diamond defines a collapse as a drastic decrease in human population size and/or political/economic/social complexity, over a considerable area for an extended time. (Goodreads, 2016) It starts by giving example of past civilizations that couldn?t manage problems such as overpopulation and food supply. Likewise, the book also compares the past civilizations experiences with our modern society. Jared Diamond highlight some of the ecological factors that influence societies to ?fail?. For example, it includes deforestation, water management issues, population growth and limiting biodiversity (both fauna and flora). Therefore, the book includes the consequence of such acts in the modern society and how we are more vulnerable than ever to environmental issues, mainly because our world is connected and countries are dependent on each other. The book is extremely interesting to who is interesting in Climate Change and environmental risks, giving a wise explanation of the possible effects of the environmental destruction and the impacts in our daily life. Besides, it can also be a food for thought to the ones interested in conspiracies and apocalyptic stories. Overall, the book is based on suppositions but without ignoring reality and current events. Thanks for sharing, Luiz! Actually, I knew about this author through his famous book 'Guns, Germs and Steel', but it is my first time acknowledging he also wrote ones related to environmental issues. Thanks for letting us know, and have a great day :)

Looks like a realistic book. Even now if the problem of overpopulation and food insecurity is not solved then the end is sure.
