Recycling in BaH - an unused Potential

Recycling in

 Bosnia and

Herzegovina

We all know  recycling as a very

 important practice that contributes

to a cleaner environment, but not all

 countries give enough emphasis on

 its significance.

Currently, Europe's

average recycling rates of waste go

above 50%, while Bosnia and

 Herzegovina is only at a 10 %,

 which is around the average

 recycling range of the region.

Inadequate waste management is one

 of the biggest environmental

 problems our region is facing,

and especially during the floods in

 May 2014, that caused significant

 damage.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the 32nd

 country of the European packaging

 waste management and recycling

 system, with the nonprofit

 organization EKOPAK as its own

 "operator".

From 2012 to 2014, the EKOPAK

 organization had collected 20 000

 tons of packaged waste, which

were not only properly managed to

 legal- sanitary landfills, but also

 recycled and reused.

The annual EU recycling profit is

about 145 billion euros, which goes

to show how recycling can also be

economically profitable.

On the other hand, tens of millions

of euros worth of resources go

to waste due to only a

small percentage of waste that goes

 through the recycling process.

A solution to this problem would

 have another benefit: tens of

 thousands of working places

would be opened, and the EU

 hopes that Bosnia and Herzegovina

 can develop the needed

 infrastructure for waste

 management and recycling systems.

It is a wonder that recycling hasn't

taken over the world as quickly

as it should've.

Thanks for letting us know, Armin! Though the recycle rate is low currently, I hope in the future, the government could put more attention to the importance of recycling. Thanks for sharing!

It's sad that at present the recycling rate in Bosnia and Herzegovina is only 10 %. Let's hope that government and other local authorities implement some measures/systems to encourage people and companies for recycling. Thanks for sharing.
