Green and Modern - Mix and Match

by | 10-03-2017 07:14 recommendations 0

"Surely the ?business of farming? includes the conservation of the environment? How can it be healthy ?business? if it erodes the soil, contaminates our waterways and our groundwater and even the food it produces?"[1]

This is what Waller said about how modernization brings up pollution to the world. Modernization had introduced us car, coal and that change our way of life to be relying on gadgets that exhaust pollutants to our surroundings.  It is true that modernization has been damaging our planet Earth direct and indirectly, but modernization also revolutionize and reinvent platforms for us to make our planet to be green and greener.

Bioremediation has been a great helping hand to mankind on their mission, to make the Earth greener. According to internet webpage - http://bioremediation2.weebly.com/what-is-it.html, Bioremediation is the use of microorganisms to degrade pollutants in soil or bodies of water. These can either be naturally located in the polluted area or genetically altered or they can be artificially placed in the environment and genetically altered. [2] Bioremediation can be used to clean up pollutants naturally without producing any harm to surroundings. A great example of usage of bioremediation can be seen in clean-up of oil spills. Oil spills have been a serious headache to mankind and tragedy to wildlife especially aquatic lives. Oil spills sticks to animals and coat their feathers and fur, resulting in reduction of animals? ability to regulate their body temperature. The importance of prokaryotes to petroleum bioremediation has been demonstrated in several oil spills in recent years, such as the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska (1989), the Prestige oil spill in Spain (2002), the spill into the Mediterranean from a Lebanon power plant (2006), and, more recently, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (2010). [3] These definitely aid and save numerous aquatic lives.

Besides that, another revolution of mankind that are making the Earth greener is the invention of internet. The invention of internet has been drastically revolutionise the world whether be it in economy, social, and education aspects.  In social aspect, internet brings give birth to the world largest social network – Facebook which connects more than a billion users regardless of background, gender, and nationality. These social networks prepare platforms for users to interact and make discussion among users. But how does this helps us to make the Earth greener? By having a platform specialised for ecology discussion. A very good example would be the website you are surfing now, tunza.eco-generation.org. Reading articles and shout out your thought in the comment session or even write your own article would allow everyone to exchange thought and promote awareness about pollution.

Cheng, thank you for the report. Surely modernization has pros and cons. You introduced us Bioremediation and internet. Personally Biomediation was more intriguing because we are all too familiar with internet. For the next report you could write about oil spills. How they started, how it is working, are there any challenges with oil spills. Also you could write more about an internet platfor focused on environmental issues.

Hi Cheng! Thanks for sharing your article with all of us!
It is such an interesting thought! Most of people still think that modernization is what destroyed our natural environment. However, including Bioremediation that you mentioned, there are many high end technologies which can help our nature recover itself.
I think there are really alot to talk, so it would be great if you do more research on it and share it with us next time! Thanks again!

I like the title of your report and your point of view.
That's the beauty of environmental biotechnology that it offers so many clean tools, techniques and approaches like bioremediation,Bioaugmentation, biostimulation and biocontrol approaches using microbial inoculants, biofertilizers to improve soil, fertility and crop productivity.
And definitely, internet invention is the most useful and revolutionising. Thanks for the report.
